I know that in Seoul there are certain districts where you can find tons of stores with lots of the same things, i.e. electronics=yongsan, home improvement jogno-3-ga.... Where do I go to find cheap music equipment. I just want a cheap azz bass to fiddle around with. No Ibanez or Kramer or anything like that. maybe 200,000 won for one with an amp. |

I've been jonesin for a bass, too. After six years of always having my Warwick by my side, I almost went apesh*t my first couple months in Korea not being able to play. I miss my baby but could settle for a cheap hooker for the time being. |

Maybe they'll come out again around Xmas time. They were pretty popular here, along with those singing Santas. |

Hollywood - Nagwan at the end of Insa-dong. Huge concret monolith straddling the road to the left of the park end of Insa-dong.
There are many cheap basses and amps. You might struggle to buy a bass and amp for 200,000 KRW, but it won't be that far adrift. I have bought 3 basses there including a cheap Korean made acoustic bass, active, for 175,000. It plays quite well. |

Thanks Wangja. I'll check it out this weekend. Is your acoustic one of the rounder bodied ones, or is it more conventional shaped...like a standard acoustic guitar. I remember seeing some in the states a few years ago that sounded nice, but the shape of the body made it hard to play. |

It's a conventional acoustic guitar look, very large body of course that does not sit well over my belly. But it was cheap and excellent value for money. I took it to UK last time I went and left so I always have one available. I have three other basses here with me, so I'm fixed up here.
Nagwan is not open every Sunday, btw, some very confusing rules. |

I bought a practice amp, some weird brand I'd never heard of (Cadenza) that is made in Korea but has all the US plugs, so I guess is made for export, tuner and case for 180,000 for the set in Songtan. It's a strat copy, and not so bad considering I'm getting back into guitar after 4 or 5 years of not playing. Certainly does the job. I'll pick up one of those Fender jazz babies in a couple of months. |

Got to wonder about a guy with a fish fetish......large- or smallmouth?
Ignore this post.....just in a weird mood!
Seriously, Nagwon Arcade is a good bet for musical instruments..... |

Wangja, how did you take your bass (musical instrument, not large fish) home? I'd like to take my cheapo Kawasamy (who?) Strat copy home as it's surprisingly too nice to just leave, but with a suitacse, rucksack and god knows what else to carry through to Heathrow, I'd really rather not carry another 10lbs of ungainly weight.
Can you post them cheaply?
Otherwise, I'll get someone to take pictures of me in full Pete Townshend mode on my last day..heh heh. |

Singing bass. Mounted on a plaque. I think they sing an Elvis song. First time it's funny, but it gets old pretty quick. |

Ok, I forgot the fish reference. Thanks for the information. Nice bass in the photo too by the way. My dad caught one similar to that in a contest and won $250. |

I treat my basses rather badly I suppose and have 'em checked in with the suitcases. But in 20-odd years, the only problem was a slightly damaged flight case at Cairo.
Only my Crockett custom made goes in a flight case, the others just in gig bags.
Look forward to the photos ... post one of John Entwhistle too, huh? He who was the first rock bassist to show the melody possibilities of the bass. Must have been all that time listening to Jamerson stuff. |

Cheers Wangja. Although I remember seeing an Entwistle interview where he expressed envy toward a certain mate of John Lennon's for coming up with such good melodic basslines, AND having George Martin's production to make them so prominent in the mix.
In more recent years, I'd cite Andy Rourke as coming up with some real gems...there are loads of other great players I could mention, but I've been listening to loads of Smiths lately. How on earth he came up with some of his stuff is beyond me. |
