Sally at UBC recruitment got me a job in Ulsan. First, she'll do and say anything to get you to go to Korea. Once you're there she cuts all contact. She lied to me about the job. Told me that the school was financially stable, which it wasn't. She misrepresented the school in order for me to sign the contract. In the end I wished that I never dealt with her, because I had to leave my job and I had lost money over this.
Feel free to contact me by e-mail.

The school closed down? Or you left because they weren't paying you?

My idea is find out where the company posts ads and place your own ad there saying how s**t they are. I saw that at worknplay a few times. Blacklist the school as well so that others can know about it.

Sorry to hear about your story. Some recruiters really are complete b#%#^&s

Cheers

The thing that teachers often forget about recruiters is that they WORK FOR THE HAGWONS, NOT FOR YOU! Their job is to find bodies to fill positions. Even if you have to pay part of the "recruitment fee" (don't know if this is still legal or not), they STILL aren't working for you!

Read the contract with the hiring school and talk to teachers who are already there (and any who have left recently if possible) and THEN make your decision. DON'T base your decision on what the recruiter says!

Wow, thanks for the info about UBC and Sally. I have been corresponding with Sally about possible positions. She recommended me for a job in Ulsan.

She sent a picture of herself to me, because I think she is trying to use her good looks to lure me in. She was also very flirty with me, telling me how handsome I am and how I will break all the Korean girls hearts.

Does she say this to all the guys? I have a feeling she does. She sounds very nice and sincere in her emails, but after reading this post I have my doubts.

Thanks for opening my eyes!

Sally at UBC did the same to me. She sent me her picture and flirted on the phone. Also reassured me that everything would be all right and she would keep in contact with me during my contract. She never did until I left my job. After that she threaten me with being blacklisted in Korea for life and the police would arrest me at the airport if I tried to leave Korea.
Finally, no one should trust her.

I posted this ad because there are a lot of good jobs and good people in Korea. Although, most Koreans keep foreigners at a distance, don`t forget their history. The two years I spent there were fun and I traveled and learnt about Asian culture. We Westerns have it good, because English is the international language, and this is the only reason Koreans will pay us the money they do.

Cheers

Do not trust Sally, she is only interested in making money off you. As I said above, she will do anything. She has laid low for a while now, but she is back. She sent me to a W school that was on the verge of bankrupcy. After I left the school blacklisted me, so I cannot work in Korea to the end of that contract. I posting this to save you a lot of stress and fustration.

Hi Nick,

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience with Sally. She has placed me at the YES Language Center in Ulsan and I am going there on Sept. 30. So far she has been professional with me and I have not had any problems. She gave me references of two teachers who work at the school and they were open and honest in answering my questions. Several others recommeded that I take the position as well.

So far everything has been positive and hopefully it stays that way. I am flying to Ulsan with another Canadian who was also hired with the school and she has heard nothing but positive things about Sally and the school as well.

I do appreciate your warnings about Sally and I will be mindful of them in my dealings with her. Hopefully the school she sent me to will not be declaring bankruptcy anytime soon.

I think taking any job in a foreign country has risk attached to it. No matter how much research you do, there is always a chance things could go wrong. But I have a good feeling things will work out fine. I prefer to think the glass is always half full.

Hopefully your next teaching experience will be a positive one.

Regards
Craig

Hi Craig

I know things will work out well for you at YES in Ulsan. It`s a big school and I know of it. However, my encounter with Sally is very negative. Her conduct was far from professional. She was aware of the financial problem at Ewha (W) and she still sent me there. Because of this, I consider her not to be a professional.

Good luck Nick Laughing

That's the thing with recruiters and schools...

You can't assume a school is good or bad because of the recruiter.

Even the worst recruiter can set you up in a good school. If the school is good, then you won't have any problems there as you won't need to talk to your recruiter after you're there.

However, if you've been put in a not so good school, then this is where it sucks as the recruiter will ignore you as they've been paid.

That's my opinion of a good or bad recruiter. Sometimes, even if you're put in a good school, problems can arise. A good recruiter will actually try to help you. Not really sure if they can always get your problem fixed as you work for the school but at least they can get some dialogue going and usually compromises can be made.

If a recruiter cuts contact with you when you need their help, then that's bad news and that recruiter should be avoided when getting a job.
