I was reading Dose today ( www.dose.ca ) and came across the following stats:

Largest Underground railways by passenger volume:

Moscow 3.3 Billion

I have no comment except that I found them interesting and thought someone else might want to see them.

Someone on this board one time had stats of how close the stations were to one another. The stats showed that the distance between stations in Paris were the closest, while those in Seoul weren't very close compared to some others in addition to paris. He claimed it is pretty hard to not quickly run into a metro station in paris while in some parts of seoul you might have to go a fair distance before you bump into a station.

Point being that length of track and the # of passengers does say something, but it doesn't necessarily mean it is a good metro system. Not that you were saying otherwise Bulsajo, just thought i'd throw that out.

Yeah, I was just interested to see where London (and Seoul) fit in the scheme of things. Of course this set of stats covers only volume/usage not physical scale or quality.

Since the period was left out I'm guessing it's an annual figure?
That would have Moscow with 9 million users daily, or half that per morning and evening rush hour.
4.5 million daily commuters on the subway?
Does that sound right for Moscow?

The same figure for Seoul would be approximately 3 million.

Seoul subway system is pretty damn good, It's the best way to get about the city as the roads are clogged with traffic much of the time.

To be honest London's tube is a bit of an embarrasement, it is dirty and overpriced, the only thing it has going for it is that in many places you can't use your mobile phone so you don't get those annoying city types bellowing into their handsets. Some of the stations in London are pretty nifty bits of architecture but they're impractical as they're too small to handle the volume of passengers.

In Seoul at least the stations are big, though some have some pretty confusing signs about where to go. London is easy to use in comparison. Seouls subway is great clean, efficient and cheap.

Anyone know if it's fact or a nasty South Korean Spy Den rumour that the whole Pyongyang Underground is a fake? Apparently visitors to the city are taken to Station A, always let off at Station B, and never get to see the rest of the line.

Intelligence suggests underground tunnels connecting major military installations in and around Pyeongyang, and also a fully serviceable underground runway apparently.

James Bond-esque stuff indeed.
