i'm getting ready to come to korea and i'm planning to buy a new camera, probably a nikon d50 or cannon EOS, would it be cheaper to get it in korea? it'll have the english instructions and standard equip i'm guessing?

any big photography buffs out there want to give me the low down on the whole camera situation in SK? i hear digital photography is quiet popular there

I would post this on the tech forum, you'll get more responses.
Based on what I've read on Dave's I'd say that you won't find any great deals on high-end camera equipment in Korea, but I'm sure someone will post with more authoritative and up to date info shortly.

I just priced the Nikon D50 and the D70S (sequel to the D70) in best buy and they are $854.99 and $1499.00

I was looking at digital cameras when I was back in the States a few months ago but ended up not buying. Now I wish I had. The same cameras seem to be about 50% higher in Seoul.

Electronics are a ripoff here, in my experience.

I second that.
The U.S. is the best place for deals on electronic goods. Asian countries having cheap high quality technology is a myth. They have cheap technology and they have high tech, but never simultaneously.

A korean friend bought his D70 in the States, due to the price difference. This was last year, but I imagine, it's not all that different now.

Buy here. Not at home.

like i said, compare prices to danawa.co.kr, thats the yongsan site. Sure there are guys willing to rip you off, thats why I do a little thing called RESEARCH! Sure if you go alone and ask around, some will jack up the price for a foreigner! So I usually bring my Korean gf to bargain and buy. All you have to do is quote whats on the website and they will sell it for what they say it's listed at. Every camera that I compared to back home was cheaper here. (I'm talking your basic brands and basic point 'n' shoot models) IF you dont want a warranty, you can get them cheaper. I know most want warranty, so that is up to the buyer. IF you take a chance and buy without warranty, then ... BUT most quality cameras dont break within a year anyway

erm......... He's not talking about "point and shoot models"...

He wants a digital slr - Very different prices and very different markets.
But yes you are right with researching - that is always important.

Another point, I think if I was going to buy a new digital slr and spend that kind of money - I'd be inclined to go with a warranty.

As I said we're not talking about a point and click cheapy model.

yeah, a 1-yr warranty is a good thing on expensive cameras, BUT how can u say, point 'n' shoot models are cheap and clicky??? not all of them. man, u can expect to pay over 400,000 and up for good ones. thats not cheap to me.

also, think about it. if u get a 1-yr warranty or whatever then bring ur camera over here, how are you gonna get it fixed if you stay over here for a year OR more working???? it'd be pretty hard to find a place over here that will honor ur warranty!!!! good luck tryin!
