Ok, just been flicking thru the channels..... watching a couple of crap movies... (I know i should be doing other things but ...well.... bit too ummm... a wee bit hungover... to do a great deal else..)
Anyway... the same ad has been played on every damn commerical break... the ad about some kind of kimchi fresh refrigerator.... you know the one with the two typically and obnoxiously over-cute-ified (just made up a new word) kids stuffing their faces with the fermented cabbage....
If it wasn't bad enough making a fridge used for storing rotten old cabbage sound more exciting than a ten minute orgasm ..... but what really gets to me.... is the close ups of the brats chewing on the fridge contents....
please ...SHUT YOUR FREAKING MOUTHS WHEN YOU ARE EATING!!!!!!! |

Yeah, I hate that commercial, especially the part that says "THE original KIMtank" (the Korean word is probably different, but I don't know what it is). |

The first time I gave my hogwon kids chocolate, I was disgusted when I had to sit there and listen to eight or nine kids smacking their open mouths as they ate it.
I simply told them not to do that anymore, that I would never give them any chocolate or candy again if they couldn't eat right from now on. They not only eat with their mouths closed now, but they tattle on the kids who don't...and I'm not grossed out in my classes anymore.
But yesterday, at McDonalds, a group of high school girls sat next to my table. It's as if they competed with each other to see who could smack their open mouths the loudest (the same thing with my director and the Korean teachers, which is why I stopped eating with them). I mean, it's not just eating with their mouths open, there is a clicking of the tongue as well, just, apparently, for show.
If it's a cultural norm, it's the kind of norm I'd expect among inner Mongolians or Ethiopians or something, not from a semi-industrialized, modernizing people. |

There is only one thing about Korea that drives me 100% crazy(couple of others that bring me to 99%) and that is eating with one's mouth open. Basically, there is no need for it! I was on vacation in the Philippines and I had to leave the little cafe I was sitting at because of the chomping going on ACROSS the patio.
Gopher, when I worked at a hogwon I stopped eating with them at week number two of my contract. |

People react based on the norms they have been raised by, and think theirs is correct.
How one chews ones food is a silly cultural habit to get upset over.
Disgusted? Okay, that's a natural response, given our upbringing. But an initial feeling needn't be turned into resentment. Transcend your upbringing and temper your inclinations. It's not that hard to do. Look away if you have to.
We do several things which disgust Koreans. If you can't think of five or six off the top of your head then you really are out of touch with cultural differences.
This is not an issue of individual (in)tolerance. When the very same Koreans travel to Canada and chomp away I wouldn't hesitate to show my discomfort and indicate with a hand over my mouth that they should cover or shut theirs.

No need? It's not a question of need. It shows one is enjoying one's meal and indicates such in several cultures.
What is a sign of enjoyment and appreciation here is a sign of rudeness back home.

Industrialized has to mean Westernized? Are your or my expectations important? We are in Korea and Koreans have developed in their own way.
Listen to yourselves. Seriously. Do you get really get upset at such things?
Here is how you sound!

You ain't on Mars at the moment!
You're the alien here.

Blowing our noses is one....other than that I cant think of any. I guess I am out of touch.
Chewing with your mouth open is a sign of lower breeding even here in Korea.
When you see someone slurping, snortling, chomping and smacking away it is usually a peasant with little or no manners. While there is nothing wrong with some lip smacking at the end of a meal to show your appreciation of some good food it is not considered polite to do it through the entire meal.
Gum smacking is considered rude wherever you are. On the bus the other day there was an ajuma smacking and cracking her gum like it was an olympic sport and this old Korean guy turned around and gave her hell for it. Made my day
A bunch of teenagers being rude and gross while eating at a McDonalds...boy I have never seen anything like that in Canada Teenagers can be gross anywhere, it seems to be the 'cool' thing to do |

Eating with your mouth open has no social significance in this country what so ever. Has a foreigner ever been asking Was your meal good? You ate with your mouth closed. All it does is further prove the concept that Koreans do not give a shit in how they affect other people, which numerous examples can be seen on a daily basis. This not a case of burping after a meal to show your host the meal was good. |

It's a well-known fact that noisy eating in Chinese culture signifies that the food is being enjoyed.
Take your issue up with over a billion people. That Koreans share the trait of their neighbours is no surprise.
No need to justify your sense of disgust by trying to claim there are no competing norms of behavour.
It's not a simple case of manners versus no manners.
Maybe we'll just have to agree to disagree on this. |

Well some foods are noisy. I'm not usually an 'apologist' but noodles are a good example of food that should be eaten with gusto.
Slurping up some good noodles (not ramyeon cardboard) is the best way. Noodles should be served very hot, straight out of a very, very hot wok. You have to slurp them to get some air into your mouth to cool them down.
Slurp your noodles, no problem with that at all. Don't eat that hideous ramyeon stuff, it is not food.
Eating, horrible hamburgers from rotten ronnies is disgusting enough without the added sin of chewing it with your mouth open. |

Neither is Spam. But some of us can't do without it.

Sin! Thank you! I was waiting for that concept to surface here.

People that chomp their food with their gums flapping are uncivilized & lacking in class.

Agreed 100%. Monkey see ... monkey DO.
My gf is Korean & doesn't eat like a pig. She tells me that's how she was educated by her parents.

Woulda likely made mine too ... hehehe ... damn gum chomping / bubble popping adjumas.
Also, before anyone thinks of trying to fall back on the ol' cult standard cop-out, bear in mind westerners sometimes do it as well. They too should be back out on the farm with their snout in the barn yard trough.
NO CLASS.
( p.s. speaking of "manners", how about that good ol' Con dae mal ??? )

When I was in China, I took a fetching young lady to the "foreign" (Taiwanese) restaurant. I ordered fried pork cutlet. She saw me put the spoon (no forks here kiddies) in it and cut with the knife.
Her: "What that?"
Me: "Knife."
Her: "Never used that before."
Seriously. She had never used a knife before in her life. |
