Often (not always) on the buy/sell forum people try to get a little to much for their computers. We went to Yongsan today to buy a computer for a friend and here's what we picked up:

50,000 of that was because we put it on a credit card, and no monitor (I gave him my old one), but still, that's a damn sight cheaper than a lot of the lesser machines people post for sale.

I think sellers start out hopeful: hopeful the buyer is fresh off the boat. Hopeful that the buyer will see the price for a computer generally less than a year old and think it's a good deal and hopeful that the appeal of buying from an English speaker is worth the extra expense.

But if the buyer is shrewd then they should hold out for a while, when the seller gets closer and closer to their departure date I'm sure the price would drop dramatically in an effort to offload the thing.

Like most things the buyer needs to do some homework if they want to make an informed decision.
Can't fault the seller for trying to make a buck.

I guess that is true. You're selling something and want to get a good price, fair enough reallly.

It just seems to be a bit tight on the money front. I've met some people who boast about how many privates they do, how much money they make and they'll really go out of their way to screw other teachers and then claim 'Korean people hate me', these people even have a hard time going half on a taxi ride, it is always next time. Tight bastards.

I make an honest living, should I be a dishonest bar steward to make more money? Some people who are teaching here are tight $unts. There is no denying that, some of the 'teachers' here behave like nasty drug dealers.

About 11 months ago a computer-clueless friend of mine sold her computer to a computer-clueless acquaintance. I believe it was a P-133 or MAYBE a P2-something or other. She sold it for 400,000 won. It came with a spiffy 14"CRT too.

I believe she'd paid 450,000 for it about a year before, and didn't want to lose out on her 'investment'. It took about 5minutes (literally) to boot up. I know because I had it for about 2 days before the new owners came to collect it. I wore a mask at the time, but they didn't get the hint. Oh well.

Everything you mentioned about foreigners is pretty much true. People try to sell their computers at prices they think might be able to get at home or what they think is reasonable depreciation. Most of their prices are way too high.

I live in Sokcho, way out from the major cities. If I were to buy a computer new here from any store, I could expect to pay more than 20% more than if I got everything in Seoul. Therefore I usually order all my parts from yongsan online when I build people computers here.

Having said that and priced out the list that was posted there. If you paid by cash you could have bought it all and had it shipped to you for about W435,000. By card it should have cost you less than W475,000. If you added 20-30,000 they would send it pre-assembled. So this makes your point even stronger in a way because that means the high prices on this board are even more outrageous. However, it seems you too have fallen victim to the varying price range from store to store, person to person.

The most important thing, of course is to do your research before you buy anything.

People buying computers in Korea should remember that this is one of the most wired if not the most wired country in the world. Therefore there are new products coming out every day, thus decreasing the resale value of any computer dramatically. If you buy it for 600,000 today, in 2 months or so you would only have to pay about 500,000 new. (depending on parts of course)

this is all true unless you want to buy a notebook computer. Yeah, uh-huh, lets try and find a notebook computer in Korea new for less than 1,500,000 won. Most foreigners are selling their notebooks...

Well, depending on the specs you can get a brand new notebook here anywhere from 600,000-3,000,000+

Also, most people aren't selling notebooks. It is roughly half and half. Only in the last month or two have there been a lot of wanted or selling ads with laptops(notebooks).

Also, in your post you failed to mention enough specs for someone to have a good idea of what is capable of without having to look-up outdated webpages to find your computer model. For example what is the CPU speed?
