The CA State Dept. of Justice building presently has a gallery of 30 pieces of art by lawyers. One of the paintings depeicts the USA in a toilet bowl and has "T'anks Bush" written next to the toilet. GOP leaders are angry.

This should be a tactic of a Democratic insurgency. Secretly, and on a grassroots level, put things up like this. Use expressions of opinion that may not be entirely tasteful and arguably inappropriate but are neither outrightly illegal or forbidden. Watch the GOP overreact to each one and slowly push them into ultra-defensive mode. It's important that none of the works have overt or even tracable Democratic ties.

Yeah. I saw another picture of it in the paper (unfortunately not on the website) where it showed how hidden it is. It's in a freaking lunch room where only those sitting in a few select tables near it can see the painting.

Ahh let the painting stay it is called Freedom of Speech. But in the same room I would either hang a

1. Copy of the Ten Commandments
2. "Buddy Bush" Statue. Think Buddy Christ but Bush.
3. A stuffed and mounted Elks head with the Gun that killed it under the head.
4. A couple of over patriotic flag strewed items.

Add your opinions on what should be hung up beside the t'anks Bush picture.

1. It isn't art, but sponsorship or religon.
2. Huh? Why not?
3. What would be the point?
4. Why would that be objectionable?

I don't get #2-4.

True none of 4 recomends is art. And that is what the painting is. (well to a degree is art - to each there own interpretation).

1. It gets to that sort of right versus left. Freedom of Speech would include Freedom of Religion.

2. Irony. T'anks Bush. For people who would not like Bush a statue would be just a galling.

3. Well one would be the anti-gun left bent and the other is what one person considers crass another would consider beatiful.

4. Once again Irony. All that flag waving a few years ago after 9/11 really irritated many on the left. Whats a few more kitchsy flag strewed items to annoy people.

Come on Join in the Fun. Me I go the old left - right route. What do you think a few lefties would could put up to cause some more fury.

BB has already made the point about artistic expression vs. sponsorship of religion.

Though I would correct him slightly and point out that, in certain contexts, a work of art(such as a 10 Commandments reproduction) can be used to sponsor religion.

Ok. Artistic Expression.

A nice pianting of Moses coming down from the Mountain. With the Ten Commandments Tablets.

How about this one painting of Jesus in any style.

To me when I look at the painting I do not see much art I just see a slightly sarcastic political cartoon.

It is so simplistic in its message. That a five year old could get it. "united States is in the s-hitter. And it is all George W. Bushes Fault."

But me I am not a Art Major. I am just saying what then would you hang up to cause a ruckus like this.

Jesus is a religous symbol. Same with Moses walking down from Mt. Sinai.

Now if you had a painting mocking bill clinton, fair enough.

I think it's a pretty crappy piece of art, too (so to speak). That in can elicit this kind of reaction though amuses me at first, and makes me a little sad upon reflection.

From the article :

"I don't know why we need to tolerate the cheap artwork of a gadfly with a world view that is so offensive to a majority of the people," said Karen Hanretty, a spokeswoman for the California Republican Party.

What I find amazing is that a public official doesn't understand why it is that democracy requires us to be tolorant of worldviews outside the mainstream.

Very amazing, in fact.

I say leave it in there.

A) It's the guy's right.

B) It looks like deep fried ass and only highlights the fact that the best this tool can do is create something only slightly above the scope of your average kindergartner.

C) It's a great advertisement for the conservatives. I love seeing the collective hissy fits of the left. Nothing says "winning team" like incessant whining!

The problem is their is always somebody out their who is going to get offended. Never will everybody agree with a message.

Some people got offended because of where the painting was posted. it was in a court house which people consider should be

a) loyal to the goverment

or

b) impartial and blind like the law is.

Except maybe that "Battlefield: Earth" was a horrible movie. Whoops I am wrong. The Scientologist thought it was GREAT!

Let them do in on their own property.

Keep political advocacy and other subjects out of non political government buildings .
