I got into Phuket this afternoon.
I walked around the Patong area and saw hotels that I have stayed at on the main road in the past that are now either under reconstruction or just empty.
If any of you are thinking of visiting you should. It's still "high" season but with the tsunami there really never was a "high season' in terms of the number of people that normally visit Phuket at this time.
Prices seem reasonable: 700 Baht for a nice, new air con room, 150 Baht to rent a bike for a day, 180 Baht or a new pair of sandals, and 100 Baht or a pair of fake Oakleys.
Weather is good but May is the start of the 'rainy' season.
Temperature today was about +35c, I think. |

Yes. People should spend their money in the tsunami hit region. It's still a nice place to go to. |

a friend of mine who i met in Korea (taught with her) actually experienced it. We haven't been in very close contact and i just heard the story quite recently.
She was actually on the beach that very morning but went away when she noticed the water was acting strange. When the wave hit, she ran through the city to higher ground (she was in phuket). while she was on the hill and after the danger passed she wondered around helping people and giving medical aid (she used to be lifeguard...).
The last i've heard of (though sadly not from) her is that she was going to buy one of the bars that got washed away and try to start it back up.
If i hear anything on the matter....this place will be the first know know.
to ackerman...if you read this...love to you and i hope thigns are going well |

Me and the old lady have been looking at investment properties.
We're going to see one tomorrow near the Laguna Beach resort area that sustained 1st floor damage - the 2nd and third floors are fine. The owners have decided to sell it after it is rennovated. Prices look affordable and there is lots of developing going on up north.
After talking to the agent, it seems there are quite a few Chinese who have bought rental properties here.
One of the guys I teach with recently bought a condo in Thailand as well.
Who is the poster on here who bought a place in Phuket? |

Special package at 599,999won or $600 to Thailand, Pattaya, Singapore, and HK for 7 days in mid and late April.
Has anyone had any first-hand experiences at Freedom tour company or this package?
Click under southeastasia package. Then click under page 3 at the bottom of the webpage and scroll down to the middle. This website is in only Korean, so you might need an interpreter.
The website is at kb.freedom.co.kr |

Man. tourism has really hit rock bottom here in Phuket.
Great time to come.
Roads are that much safer with less traffic on them and the price of rooms are really affordable.
Great selection of good food also, at reasonable prices.
A lot of okama here there. A huge district here in Phuket dedicated to Gay men.
Messages are great - make sure you get the obachan to give you message - they really do a good job. |

just got back. best week of my life. i spent a little more money than i had planned to, but it was well worth it. stayed in a nice hotel with a beautiful pool right next to the beach. proposed to my girlfriend (we're already engaged, but i did the whole kneeling down ring thing), lost a four hour fight with a marlin (but i caught a sailfish... almost as good), ate fantastic food, drank a lot, read a lot, rode an elephant, and got a hell of a lot of rest.
anyway... they cleaned up the place nicely. it's a good place to go. have fun! |

Wow, how long did it take you to think that one up?
The bonus is that you've just shown everyone that you don't how the word is pronounced, which really does make your post funny after all.
How's that for irony? |
