Hey all,
Just wondering if anyone is familiar with this part of town (20 min. subway ride to "downtown Seoul" I am told). If so, I'd love to hear what its like. Good location? Anything much to do in the immediate area? Very many expats around? Restaurants/bars/nightlife? Parks? Hikes? Pollution factor? I'm considering accepting an offer that has come through a school there. (Winston Language Institute). Thanks folks!

Dont listen to him. It is a part of Anyang city. I use to work there. It is a very nice area and has alot of expats. It is a new planned city. There are a few parks, and not alot of pollution compared to Seoul. There are two subway stations in the general area, as well as a walmart and lotte mart. As for restaurants there is a mcdonalds, burgerking, subway, pizza hut, domino's etc. It is really a cool area. As for distance from Seoul. It is a bout 45 minutes to Itaewon. There are alot of buses as well, that connect easily to any part of Seoul. Gangnam is about 40min by bus. I have not heard of your prospective school, but if you have any questions about the area just PM me. |

I have been to Pyeongchon, and I liked the feel of the town. Much of it is newer, and nice. |

I live in Beomgye, which is nearby. It's a "new" area with lots of shopping, eating and drinking establishments, movie theaters, everything you could want. However, it has no soul. It's a landlocked city, many of the buildings look alike, there's no history or art or culture. I would 10x rather be in Seoul where I can meet friends and do cool stuff. I would 100x rather be in any other country. |

I lived there for 3 years and it is a ... fine place. There are all the amenities you will need, however it is lacking in certain areas (such as fresh air and cute girls). |

Thanks for the info -- I didn't realize the school was in Anyang! Jeezus. Another thing I found crappy was this quote from the one current foreign teacher who is there right now: "through the middle of the neighbourhood is an elevated highway which I though was kind of ugly, but is a good thing when you're walking to work in the rain." Sound ooo-gly. |

It's not ugly, really. I just think it's like the never ending city. I wish there were a lake, or a historic temple, or *something* to break up the city city city. |

Okay, I know exactly where you're talking about. That's Pyeongchon, but about 15 minutes walk from the station. There are only about three coffee shops there, but a lot of bars. There's one right nearby that a lot of English teachers go to. It's about halfway on the way to Sanbon as well, as the elevated highway takes you straight there.
There are tons of hagwons in that area.
I lived in Sanbon for a year and it's nice. Sanbon, Beumgye, and Anyang are the places to hang out. |

This guy is probably going to work on "hagwon-da", supposedly the most concentrated cluster of hagwons in Korea. I don't know if that's true but there are certainly a lot of foreigners working on one street. It's about a 15 minute walk either to Pyeongcheon downtown or Beomgye downtown (I live near the latter.) There are *lots* of bars, restaurants, coffee shops, PC bangs, and other shopping choices. He needn't worry about lack of things to spend money on. |

This guy seems to know what he's talking about! Thanks for the help everyone. What my dilemma is now is: to take this job or to leave it.
The pluses:
- good salary for a first time
- single housing
- hours 2 or 3pm til about 9-10pm
- apartment 5 min. walk to school
- no weekend work
the minuses:
This is a small school, not part of any chain.. With this in mind, its pretty hard for me to be able to tell if its a fly by night or not. Or if it is stable enough that it will be able to pay me consistently, or even not go broke altogether. I spoke with the one other foreign teacher who works there right now. Theres him, 2 Korean teachers and the director. The guy I spoke with said it was a good place to work, and generally had good things to say. He says its been in business for 3 years and that they have about 100 students. He answered all my questions and I didn't sense any lying or sketchiness. Then again, he said that it takes 20 minutes to get to downtown Seoul (by subway and/or by bus), and all of you are telling me it takes an hour. What's up with that? I don't know how people balance out between taking a reliable job with not the greatest schedule/pay/etc (ie. YBM.ECC), or taking a better looking job where reliability appears to be unverifiable. |

Yup, that's the place. It's right next to Lotte Mart, so you'll be convenient for your grocery shopping. And there's a huge fish market across the street that's great for buying fresh fish or eating sushi.
The address is techinically Uiwang City, but you're closer to the Pyeongcheon/Beomgye areas for socializing.
Don't worry about the overpass. It's still a decent area to live and work. |
