The Good News:
The Global War on Terror is over!
Doesn't that boost your spirits? Improve your morale? Make you want to jump up and down and say, "Hot diggity!"
It should. You can even take a moment and breathe a sigh of relief.
The Bad News:
The Bush administration now calls it the Global Struggle Against Extremism. As Jon Stewart says, we are now in phrase 2 of the war.
Potential Good News:
Certain denizens of this forum might be getting nervous about now if they are going to be included in the administration's definition of extremism. |

It's a little hard to tell, isn't it? I have a sneaking suspicion we were losing and the only thing the administration could think of was to change the name since they won't change the policies. |

I'd strongly recommend reading Norman Podhoretz if you want a good indication of the phases this 'war' will take. Unfortunately for him and his ilk, a few thousand determined Iraqi insurgents have bogged down the whole grand scheme, and regime change of Syria or Iran looks almost impossible for the time being. |

That is kind of because there are creeps out there who fight for the samethings as Bin Laden w/o being members of Al Qaida. |

Strange comment! It reminds me when Margaret Thatcher completely defeated the problem of the unemployed, they all magically became 'job seekers' overnight |

If they were being honest they would have labelled it correctly. Exactly what type of extremism are we fighting?
What do Bin Laden, Abu Zarkawi, Jemaah Islamiya, Islamic Jihad, the Madrid bombers, the London bombers....etc, etc all have in common?
Recognising what we are dealing with may help us go some way in winning this conflict. |

And who said PC was only a phenomenon of the left? I'm impressed with her solution to a significant problem with the mere swoop of a pen. Way to go, Maggie! |

Stephen colbert always makes me laugh.
He did the 'struggle against extremism' bit in a WWII era salior's uniform. "Recruiters reported that 'War' and 'Terror' didn't test well; A war you might lose, but a struggle you can sort of live with, and everyone knows kids are into 'extreme' stuff." [does Bill & Ted air guitar solo]
It's satire, but it's also probably as good an insight behind the switch in semantics as we're going to get... |

I saw that too. It's a sad, sad commentary on the state of modern media when the best, most insightful analysis is regularly delivered by the comedy writers on The Daily Show. I choose to blame it all on Rupert Murdoch, because he's a foreigner.
I'm hoping I can learn to download programs after I return to Korea because I will really miss Jon Stewart if I don't.
PS: Have you seen the new Carlos Mencia show? He's excellent with race jokes. A very sharp observer. |

This reminds me of how Fox news thought that suicide bombers didn't produce enough of a reaction so they decided to say "homicide bombers". I've even noticed a certain person who loves fox on this very board use the above mentioned term. Oh another one that referred to U.S. troops who were "snipers" again was deemed too negative so they were referred to as "marksmen". What a joke in my opinion. They can try and blow sunshine up our asses all they want but hopefully we can see through it. |

Isn't this what the Left wanted all along? To change the unfortunate wording? Well, now the administration has, and it certainly is a better phrase. Never really was a fan of the last phrasing.
But then again, this goes to show one of the main reasons the Bush administration doesn't try to reach out to a little less than half of the country on the Left. Because in the few cases when they do, they are mocked and viewed with suspicion. |

I think as far as changing the word 'war', it's not the actual change being mocked but the reasons and the timing behind the change.
And the mocking is more of the 'see? We told you so' sort.
As for changing the word terror, I can't figure that one out so I'm gonna assume that it's exactly what Colbert and Stewart say it is- psychologically motivated to make Americans less uneasy and more willing to sign up. That's also worth mocking. It goes back to the whole "How stupid do you think we are?" mentality. I'd say the current administration thinks that your average American is pretty damned stupid... |

depending on the reaction, I think there are a lot of people outside the US who are whispering to each other..."how stupid ARE they????" |

"homicide bombers " is more accurate. |
