What is the deal with Rocky Mountain Tavern. The guys who work there are such jerks sometimes. I mean, wow, it's great that you are over 30 and working in bar in Korea, but does that really make you so much better than everyone else? Okay, so I know like 50 people, who hang out there all the time are gonna come down on me, but I'd like to clarify. The little bald dude that owns the place is cool. But, that guy, the one that is balding, J something, is so fake nice. His meathead light haired counterpart is a real ass too. I don't want to get into what happened, but has anyone else had problems at this place, or think it's weird sometimes? Just asking. |

I went there once, seemed OK but a little dull. Too many Canadians slapping each other on the back for being Canucks is what comes to mind, and the floors covered in peanut shells is messy and a bit weird, don't they have bins in Canada? People were friendly and very polite though.
What problem did you have with the place? |

I agree this is a major problem because there is only one bar in the whole of Korea............. |

I've walked by there with very little curiosity indeed. I know scores of Canadians here already, and if I wanted to go to places like that I would have stayed in Canada. Maybe I'll go there for the playoffs this year if they happen and there's no where else to watch them, but that's about it. |

Right, I get that is it isn't the ONLY bar, but it is a bar where my friends like to go often, thus the slight problem. It does seem like a place where Canada folk go to fel good about beings Canucks. Not to be an ass, but it also where I have seen the highest concentration of "larger boned" ladies, many without bras![/quote] |

I like the place and I am not a Canuck. Clean place, good prices, and you don't have to say Cassu to get a drink.
Do you have any idea what this place (country/Itaewon) would be like with out guys like the RMT, the French guy that owns the Italian and French restaurants across from KB bank, the Korean/American woman that owns Susies, and of course me? You would be eating frozen chicken wings from Costco, Ziti in ketchup, Pomme Frits passed off as roasted potatoes, Blugogi shaped like a Meatloaf, paying 1,000 won less than the new price for a used book.
I am not saying bow down to the foreigners that own businesses, but at least judge the business not the person. People have bad days and are not always in a good mood. Shit, I am an as*hole but I think I am pretty fair in my store. The foreign business owners in Itaewon really make the Koreans up the bar a bit in their business practices and service. The RMT guys do a straight up job and I applaude them. As a matter of fact here is a little story that happened just this past Tuesday.
Had some drinks and wings at the Tavern and it got a bit loud so we headed someplace else (were not in that kind of mood). We decided upon Helios and ordered a pitcher of beer. The pitcher came and it tasted like absolute ass. Called the waiter over and explained that it did not taste good and asked him to bring a couple of bottles over instead--taking the pitcher away. The rat bastard said, "No". I about blew a fuse. Told him to bring the manager over. After a group dicussion of about six of them, he came back and took the pitcher away. Freaking amazing. |

Okay, I never said the place had poorly priced drinks etc. I simply asked if anyone had problems there ever. I take it your answer would be no. There was really no need for an all out "waygook buisness owners" unite diatribe. How would my life be without RMT, or even "What the Book?" Well, exactly the same. Oddly enough, my life does not revolve around Itaewon, sorry to let you down. |

I should have figured that you guys would miss the point and use this as an opportunity to take a few jabs. I am saying the overall idea of what foreign business owners do in Korea, not the particular business that they run and how that particular place affects your life exactly. I am far from condoning the idea that you should shop at a place because a whitie owns it. That is just plain stupid. You just have not been here long enough to see how monopolistic Korean business owners can be (and as a group).
But, is it a stretch that the foreigner owners in Itaewon have put the Korean owners on watch? Think about:
When did nicer restaurants start showing up in Itaewon?
Besides Geckos, which by the way a long time ago had a foreign "investor", when did bars start being a bit better than the average hole in the wall? |

They do a good feed of bacon and eggs for 7,000 won on the weekend; a decent helping and strong coffee without a hint of that evil hazelnut. One time I was there there was this David Lee Roth-wannabe poncing around with his shirt off. On a Sunday afternoon. What an ass-clown. That could happen anywhere, though. |

Yep, chubbies go there in droves. If you're a chubby chaser it must be paradise on earth Chubbies 'without bras' Didn't see that thank god. One mans heaven is anothers hell I guess.
The place seems decently run, fair priced and has competent service. Not a bad place by any means, especially if you have a fattie fetish
WTB guy has valid points about more competent foreign owners driving up standards in Itaeweon, some of the foreigners in Itaewon -by no means all- provide an excellent standard and are more than competive against their Korean competitors. Standards in the 'won are rising which is great to see. More decent food places, rising standards of service in many places. It can be a bit pricey in some of the better places but then I'll pay a little more for a superior product and not bitch about it.
Not kissing arse -a discount would be nice - or anything but WTB is a great store and I'm glad that it's moved to better premises, I wish the guy every success in his busines. Foreigners often seem to be a lot more critical of bad service than Koreans and whilst they may not always make a fuss about the standard if you deliver value and good service you will be a success and generate repeat business.
Some Korean businesses thrive because they are very accomodating to their customers, some people in my local area and all around Korea are doing a great job in providing value and great service to customers. Other Korean businesses are terrible, it sometimes feels in these places that you're asking them for a troublesome favour rather than doing them a favour by being a patron of their business. The latter can kiss my hairy ddong ko mon.
Dealing with the general public is pretty horrid, and people who own and run shops and businesses have a great deal of challenges to overcome. If you can overcome all the stress caused by idiot customers and the red tape then you deserve reward. My dad runs his own business and I can sometimes see how it can be a pain in the arse. Running your own business gives you a chance to make a lot more money than working your arse off and paying for your boss to make a fat check every month.
Where I used to work in the UK I loved it when I was dealing with business people, dealing with the general public however is very challenging. Business people could understand that I had to make profit and deliver value to them and were usually reasonable about it, the general public would often expect way too much. Good business people are reasonable and smart, many people in the general public can often be unreasonable and intolerably stupid.
EDIT. Apologies for being so long winded, but others on this post are almost as bad Think of it as a summary of my thoughts on business, 'chubbies' and Canadian chubsters.
BTW. Not all Canadian girls are chubby some of them are bloody gorgeous. I don't want anyone getting upset over this its just on the one occasion I went to RMT-it was very busy-there were 5 or 6 chubby girls to maybe 1 who is in the proper shape. On another point some of the fat chicks could be really good looking if they laid of the donuts and maple syrup diet, like a Brit friend of mine did. She has always been a nice wonderful person but a lot on the chubby side. A decent diet and exercise regime turned her into a wonderful person who is really cute.
Sorry again about my longest post. Something is making me pontificate about everything today And I always complain when other people do this! |
