Foreigners to Teach at SNU Law School

Seoul National University will bring in foreign professors to teach regular classes at its college of law as soon as this fall, it said Wednesday.
The university will import three professors per year over the next three years who specialize in Anglo-American law, continental law or laws of East Asia countries. They will lecture in their language at the graduate school and be paid $60,000-80,000 annually.

SNU is saying they'll do this, but wether they really will is another thing. Their statements about hiring foreign law professors are to only to appease certain members of the public. The Korean law schools are under fire because of Handong Universitie's Law programe which has been organized to prepare it's graduates to take the U.S. Bar exam. No Law programe in any Korean university produces lawyers of any calibre. Law programes in Korea are only good for producing secretaries to work in the public service.

Len8,

I was curious about the commitment of SNU to actually hiring and paying the foreign professors.

"They will lecture in their language at the graduate school and be paid $60,000-80,000 annually."

I wonder what the salary range is for other foreign professors at SNU.
What is the salary range for foreign professors in Seoul?
What is the salary range for Korean professors at SNU and in Seoul?

$60,000-80,000?

How many years would you have to work in Korea as a foreign (guest)professor to receive an annual salary of $80,000? It probably is U.S. dollars, right?

80,000 AUD = 63,797,109 KRW
80,000 BSD = 94,833,596 KRW
80,000 CAD = 70,955,996 KRW
80,000 FJD = 51,040,687 KRW
80,000 HKD = 12,160,024 KRW
80,000 NZD = 55,456,501 KRW
80,000 SGD = 54,831,198 KRW
80,000 USD = 94,833,595 KRW

Real reality. They have been advertising those positions for years. The paye is high, but how do you think a foreigner would be treated by his lower paid co workers. No one of any any calibre is going to want to come to Seoul National university unless the working environment is suitable. Working in a programe run by Koreans is not something any smart thinking man is going to want to do.

I quoted the Handong University programe, because all the staff are from the U.S. They aint working with Koreans. They run it completely, and are very independent. Seoul national university are envious and want to do the same thing, but do you think they'll allow a foreign professor or professors to work independently. Not a prayer.

Len8,

Thank you for your comments.

I wish a few others would comment.

Well, I can hope for conditions to improve for foreigners in Korea.
