Russian fury at rebel on US TV
VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV
IN MOSCOW
RUSSIA'S foreign ministry summoned the United States charge d'affaires yesterday to protest against a United States television network broadcasting an interview with a Chechen rebel leader.
The interview with Shamil Basayev, who has claimed responsibility for last year's Beslan school siege - which ended in the death of more than 330 children and adults - and the 2002 seizure of a Moscow theatre that left 129 hostages dead, was broadcast on Thursday by ABC. In the interview, he admitted he was a terrorist but said each Russian had to feel the impact of war in Chechnya before it can stop.
Boris Malakhov, Russia's foreign ministry spokesman, said Daniel Russell, the US envoy, was informed of Russia's "strong indignation".
On Russian state television, Mr Malakhov said ABC "demonstrated its outrageous disregard for the standards of journalists' responsibility and common human values".
Neither ABC nor the US embassy had immediate comments on the meeting. Mr Russell is the top US diplomat in Russia, pending Senate confirmation of William Burns as the new US ambassador.
The interview also was denounced by Alu Alkhanov, the Kremlin-backed president of Chechnya, a predominantly Muslim region where Russian troops have been battling separatists for most of the last decade.
"I was startled by how they allowed this person, who openly claimed responsibility for dozens of terrorist attacks in Russia, which claimed hundreds of human lives, to voice new threats against Russia and the Russian people," Mr Alkhanov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency. |

The Russians are idiots. THey assasinated the only legit leader of the Chechens w/in the past year. Consequently, the a-hole that was interviewed by ABC now has more power and influence amongst Chechans. The russians just radicalized them even more. Dumb. THey should have gotten rid of this bastard instead. |

I would like a reasoned explanation of why ABC is considered leftist. If you consider Fox News centrist, then yes ABC would be leftist. By those standards, my dyed in the wool Republican granny who would've voted for Teddy Roosevelt had she been allowed to vote back in '04--that's 1904--would be considered a flaming revolutionary. |

Wasn't Teddy Roosevelt considered rather liberal, at least on domestic issues? I usually here him associated with the "progressive", as opposed to the pro-business wing, of the GOP. And in those pre-New Deal days, I don't think there was any reason to consider the GOP as a whole more liberal than the Democrats as a whole.
On foreign issues, of course, TR was pretty hawkish. |

Russians, and so many others, totally misunderstand the United States.
Do they really believe that complaining to the government about the activities of a private news service will bring about any results? |

It reminds me of that British nanny who was on trial for murdering the baby in Boston, and the Fleet Street tabloids were running editorials calling for Bill Clinton to do something about it, and asking their readers to boycott American products.
PRIVATE EYE magazine had a pretty funny send-up of all this: they provided a list entitled "Amercan-owned companies you can boycott", which included a bunch of the Fleet Street tabloids that were supporting the nanny. |

Yes, he was. He was from the progressive wing of the Republican Party. One of his nicknames was the Trust-Buster because he broke up a couple of trusts on the basis that competition is good in a capitalist society. He also favored Civil Service reform over the spoils system. A flaming revolutionary by anyone's standards. |

Quite the exact opposite in my opinion. |

Fine. "Russians, and so many others, totally misunderstand the United States, as the United States totally misunderstands them." |
