I was off the coast of Aceh in Indonesia a few years ago in a place called Pulau Weh and a neighboring island was being sold for 32,000 US$!!!!!!! The legalities of foreigners owning it were a little dubious, but it could go in the name of a local. Some of the most amazing snorkelling I've seen in my life, and for that price you really can't go wrong.

I would, but not just to hang around. There are quite a few experiments I'd like to try out using an island.

Well, I for one can see Mithridates setting up his very own House of Pain...

To go on two legs is very hard. Perhaps four is better, anyway.

But in all honestly if you're that way inclined what can you do with a deserted island that you can't do with a mold covered basement, a pregnant chick and some shackles...? In the end the results are the same as far as I can tell. The only difference is with the island you'll get a better tan.

I wonder what the price was for the island - after the tsunami.

Actually at least one side of it got nailed.
I'll try and find out the exact name of the island.

I would love to own my own island. It would be even better if it were not a part of any country, but the chances of that happening are slim to none. I seriously plan on buying an island later in life (probably not for 23 million dollars, but there are cheaper ones).

hey Frank Zappa in pigtails,

how are you going to BUY an island that's not part of a country? Presumably you'll buy it FROM someone, right?

Someone who is, in all likelihood, a citizen of one country or another?

anyway, if there are any "islands" left in this world that haven't been claimed by any nation-states, those islands are probably little more than godforsaken rocks that get buried at high tide.

In Canada you could own an island for a few thousand dollars.

But you guys seem to be speaking about an island nation, with yourselves as ruler.

In either case, I have spoken with Koreans about the desire of many Westerners - especially in parts of Canada like the Thousand Islands of the St. Lawrence and the Inside Passage of the West Coast - and Koreans don't understand why someone would want to put up a cottage or house on an island all to oneself.

Of course, Koreans are content to being crammed in high rises with thousands of other people, and don't dream of having their own island for themself and their family only.

Another case of cultural difference: Western individualism.

*beep* experiments! My island nation would be populated by a couple of women's soccer teams and me as "coach".

23 Million does not seem all that bad for that. Only a few more books to sell...

Yes, I can see it now- you'll be having a lot of shirts vs. skins scrimmages to keep your teams in fighting trim, won't you...
