Outside of Seoul, how cheap can you get a room?

I arrive in mid August and will be looking for a job, so until I find something I'll need a place/places to stay. What are the rock-bottom places and how much a night?

I don't sleep in parks or cardboard boxes, but other than that I'm not too fussy about short-term accomodation.

the going rate for a room in a yeogwan is around 30,000. They're easy to find and they're everywhere. Most are pretty clean, but they are love motels so you might get some noisy neighbors.

There are boarding houses ϼ near most universities. They're usually about 600,000 won per month and that includes breakfast and dinner.

Check out this website: www.tour2korea.com. They have a list of guest houses and homestays that are good value. Smile

That sounds a bit high. I know people that are staying in ha-sook-jips for 300-400,000 in Shinchon, and two meals are included. I also know of a goshiwon in Shinchon for 230,000 a month for a tiny prison cell-like room without a window, or 260,000 a month for a tiny prison cell-like room with a window. PM me if you want directions.

Outside of Seoul, I can't help you, unless outside of Seoul to you means Incheon.

You could stay in a Yoinsk. They are onlyW10,000 a night. They might do a deal with you if you want to stay longer. You get a bed and a TV. Toilet and shower you gotta cue up for though. You can use the local sauna for a better clean up though, and those are cheap. Some saunas and all chimchilbangs will let you sleep all night as well.
Saunas are usually W3,000 and chimchilbangs are W5,000

That's about the bottom of the barrel for waeguks. There are other places for Koreans that are cheaper, but i think they are bunks in comunal rooms so to speak

Love Motels are where it's at for cheap places to stay in Korea.

For 20k to 30k you get a big double bed, tv, and your own private bath.

There're my lodging of choice when travelling around Korea.

Thanks to all who replied. If I could be so bold as to ask a further question, are Yoinsk and Love Motels generally found around the center of towns or on the outskirts, and is there an "accomodation zone" or are they scattered all over?

Everywhere!

I have travelled and stayed in many towns and small cities and never paid more than that, often a bit less.

And only 25,000 won in big city Busan, but then I get a special manager's discount. Smile I'm a regular customer.

What is a Yoinsk? well you kind of explained it.. but how come I have never heard of one of these? I searched the forums and this is the only thread with the word "Yoinsk" in it. Are they secret or something? Is there a different korean word for them apart from this "Yoinsk"? Would they display the yeogwan/sauna style symbol outside?

I might want somewhere cheap to stay soon for a coupla weeks.

In Suncheon, there's a big renovated motel across the intercity bus terminal parking lot which has nice, newly decorated Spanish stucco rooms going for 20,000 a night. Great deal. Nice place.

In Wando there are several in the 30,000 won range, but check the rooms first. I'm glad I did because that town has a lot of run-down old motel rooms spruced up only on the outside.

As for minbak, often they ask for 40,000 or 50,000 won but they almost all can be bartered down to 20,000, the most I've ever paid. Come back at 9 p.m. and look ready to leave again (not desparate) and you'll pay no more than 20,000 won for a nice room.

The most I've ever paid for accommodations in Korea was 40,000 won at a motel in Seoul.

You can negotiate 15,000 won a night if you commit yourself to staying for several nights during the work week. Motels are small businesses and Koreans will negotiate on price, nine times out of ten in my experience. Even their refusal to change the price is just a first step in the bartering process. Seriously. Find a slow motel and offer 75,000 won for five nights. Return three times the same day to the same place. Be insistent but always with a smile and a look that says it's the best you can do.

I might check that out in the next week.. cheers. I might, for once, stay in a good yeogwan! instead of paying the regular price for a hovel which appears to be dangerous to health.

I don't know what a Yoinsk is either, but I have a feeling it's a typo since you couldn't possibly say that word in Korean. I am interested in knowing what it is, so I'm bumping this thread.
