I looked around thier site, it isn't offered in Asia. YOu would have to buy from North America or Ebay as the beave suggested |

Personally, I'm waiting for this. The LG AN110. Supposed to be due out in September. Hangs on the wall like a portrait, projects the picture onto the opposite wall. 720p, high contrast, 1100 ANSI, quiet. Hope it's not too expensive.

Superhero, Optima markets that one as a home theatre projector, but is that how you'd personally use it? Obviously, the two 5-watt built-in speakers aren't going to work (even with the little 50-watt sub they sell separately) as a serious audio setup. So, I'm guessing you see this for presentations mainly. |

You'd be far better served with a dedicated projector. You can get a Sanyo Z3 for about the same price and it's a much better piece of hardware.
(Disclaimer - I own a Sanyo Z3.)
1.
The Movietime's native resolution is only 480p.
The Z3's is 720p.
2.
No component input on the Movietime.
Two component inputs (plus HDMI) on the Z3.
3.
You probably already own a DVD player.
4.
Since the DVD player is built into the Movietime, it can only be used as a tabletop unit, and not wall or ceiling mounted.
The Movietime is an interesting idea, but I think the alternatives are better. |

Hey, Walter! Good to see you here again. You know, Thunndarr is really keen on the LG (above) as are many HT heads, and we're both waiting to see how it will price here. US$2,500 MSRP in the States (and maybe <$2k?!) or so I've read. Not due out till September. What are your opinions on that one, if any? The specs are intriguing, and I'd be seriously annoyed (i.e., the cool styling would probably lead me to compromise on other factors) were I in the market for a new proj in that spec & price range. Someone said it was a revolutionary design answer to a question nobody was asking... But I don't care. I like the looks of it, and I'll bet we'll see other flat-mounted projs before long.
Now, as to Optoma's Movietime, yes, what you say is true... but it's cute!
I do agree with your points, though. Especially Point 4, though that depends on one's own preferences and setup. (Aren't most projectors in Japanese & Korean homes sitting on coffee tables anyway?)
Composite video (& no component inputs) is unfortunate. However, since the DVD player is sending direct (no cables) digital to the projector anyway, would the absence of DVI/HDMI be a big issue? |

The LG does look nice, no doubt about that. I'd only go for something like that if It were going to be wall-mounted. Having it on its stand would be kind of annoying (too tall for a coffee table). It's a good way to get maximum throw distance in a small room.
I actually have my Z3 on a coffee table. My room doesn't have the best layout (odd shape, no large, flat wallspaces), but with the projector on the table and the screen hanging from my closet door it works quite well. I'd prefer to have it sitting next to the couch or on an overhead shelf behind it. Theater layout is going to be a big factor when I get around to hunting up a new apartment.
The lack of inputs on the Movietime is (would be) an issue depending on what you want to hook up to it. With my setup, the Xbox, Gamecube, PS2 and DVD are all using component outputs, so it's essential for me. The Dreamcast and VCR are using regular composite video. I could use S-video for the DC, but that would add one more cable running across the floor to the coffee table (in addition to the power, component and composite ones).
I haven't used the HDMI input on my Z3, as I don't have anything that supports it - yet. I know the Xbox 360 is shipping with component cables, but I strongly suspect they'll come out with an HDMI one to try and take full advantage of the HD outputs.
I went with the Z3 since I saw it as being kind of "future proof." I have no need of the HDMI just yet, but I'm glad it's there. With things shifting towards higher and higher resolutions, I wouldn't recommend anything that can't accept a digital HD signal and with a native resolution of less than 720p. 480p is probably "good enough" for a lot of people, but I want to get as much resolution as I can for my money. |

Walter, if you don't mind my asking, what made you choose the Z3 over the Panasonic AE700? From what I've seen, they're very similarly specced and priced in Korea. Just curious. |

I looked at both of them (even got to see them running the same movie side-by-side at a shop here) but went with the Z3 for a couple reasons.
1. English menus. The AE700 here only does Japanese.
2. The picture on the Z3 looked slightly better.
3. The Z3 was about 20,000 cheaper.
4. The Z3 comes in black.
5. I got a free 16:9 80" screen with the Z3.
They're both good units, but based on those points, the Z3 won out.
You can read a good comparison of these two models here. |
