>. Ummmmmm ... well, at least that is if you're an English language instructor living in Korea Wink

Yep, although they'll only rarely come right out & tell us this, it's apparently what most Koreans secretly think about westerners who come to help their country improve its English.

Remember kids, if you don't have a nice house in the west or any a$$ets to speak of ... you're nothing.

Let's make conversation !!!

Precisely.

People are trying to delude themselves that this experience is valuable and career-enhancing.

Unless you work for a university or high school, and perhaps even then still, we are merely the ninteenth-century immigrant Chinese railroad workers, the early twentieth-century West Virginia coal miners, or the modern day California fruit pickers of today's Korea.

It's not merely the lack of respect, the allegations that we are drug-dealing child porn peddlers, but also the casual way they mistreat us and take advantage of us as employees.

Luckily, I'm going to be able to conceal this experience from my c.v. when I get back, just pretend I was never here.

-hence the lack of enthusiasm they display for learning English. I mean, how can you get all excited about conversing with a loser?

koreans are among the most blatantly materialistic people I've ever known. they're into material wealth, full stop. If your life is not about accumulating assets, you may as well not exist.

Emelda marcos and Anna nicole Smith have nothing on this pool of predators.

If there's ever been a thread of posters who have feelings of low self-worth and have opted to project those feelings into the unknown thoughts of a helluva lot of people, this thread wins hand down. Rolling Eyes

why is it that if any one on this board expresses a negative opinion about korea or koreans, there is always a small number of rabid & quite nasty tossers ready to lay into them?

thankfully i no longer live in korea, and i just come on here every now and again to see what's happening.
i admit there are one of two things i do miss about the place (galbi mainly!!)- i did spend 2 years there with my wife by the way......

but in my whole time in seoul & ulsan i never once met an english teacher from any continent, or an expat for that matter (coz there are a few), who genuinely liked the place or the people.
even the geeks with their very first real life girlfriend - didn't have much of a positive viewpoint!

basically if you take away the wage, the free flights & accommodation, and if you need them, the korean women - what is there to stay in korea for??

please discuss......

ps i always write in lower case...so spare me!

Don't you feel even just a little silly making statements like this about millions of people? Nice alliteration notwithstanding.

Now if you'd reduce the pool to mean only Korean hagwon owners, then you might have a point.

I'm thinking perhaps I will just say I was in prison for years. I hear some places hire ex-cons.

Good point. Still, these hogwon owners were born, raised, educated, and shaped by which cultural environment?

Just curious, but how many Koreans have you gotten to know or hogwans have you worked for, in order to qualify a statement like that? Let's try to make discussion without the bigotry, just for kicks.

I don't often agree with you sir, but this is an excellent point you make. Well done.

If you take away the above things in ANY country, there is not much to stay there for in said country. I wouldn't stay in any country that wouldn't pay wages and cut off my access to half of the population.

And yes I have been here 5 years and noticed a number of teachers had quite popular things to say about the country. Of course if you dislike the country you will end up surrounding yourself with like-minded people and thus delude yourself into thinking that nobody except the locals like this country. I think we are all better off with things the way they are now.

And the behaviour of most Westerners does NOTHING to dispel this image. Nor is it just Koreans who think this. Watch that SBS program (you know what I am talking about) and you would probably think so too.
