Does anyone know about the legality of the Catholic School Board requiring a ��Faith Reference Portfolio,�� and letter of reference from a priest in order to be considered for employment?
I��m considering my options for teaching when I move back, and was thinking about applying to that board, until I found that information on their website.
If these were private schools I would accept that they could require whatever they felt necessary, but as Catholic schools are publicly funded, I find it a bit shocking that they require that teachers be Catholic- seems a bit discriminatory to me. Imagine a private, but publicly funded, boys�� school that wouldn��t hire women.
I know that in other countries it��s not a requirement. Sure it helps, but it��s not necessary.
I just want to know if it is in fact legal for them to require this documentation.
Any ideas or experiences?

| Catholic schools are only partly funded by the government and their teachers have a higher workload for less pay. |

Catholic schools in Canada can refuse to hire you based on your faith. However that doesnt mean they dont hire people outside their faith either. It is more of a preference thing for them.
You should apply and see what they say. |

It is entirely legla-section 23, I believe, in the Charter. In cases where demand is high, they will consider a non-Catholic, but if you don't have a Catholic education course, and the priest's letter, it's tough-however, LTO and supply teaching is open to those without it. |

Entirely legal but not a problem ---- just ask Dick C. for a reference letter! Isn't he the high priest of righteousness...?

| I don't think anything they said requires you ro be a Catholic...just to be able to document your faith (whatever that may be,) and to show that to a priest as well who can vouch for you. In practice, of course, I'm sure Catholics are preferred. I considered applying to Brigham Young University where you have to submit a statement from your minister/clergyman of whatever faith to say you are a moral person in good standing with the congregation. |

You've got to understand that Catholic churches and schools started the education system in Ontario and as such the laws were created giving them huge advantages.
All you need is a one sentence note from whatever religious leader you have saying that you participate in that religion. If a school asks for more than that then they can. Being a non-Catholic and getting hired is another thing. Unless you are a PhD or have exceptional teaching skills you will probably not get hired. Mainly because you will be required to reflect the catholic faith in all your classes and participate in mass and the sacraments.
That's pretty much standard in all religious schools. But I doubt you will see Jewish teachers in a Muslim school or viceversa. At least Catholic schools take the best teachers regardless of faith. Sure its unfair but when you came first, you get to write the rules. |
