I rented some DVD's and found them fairly entertaining. Most of them seem to center around a love story.

Any suggestions for non-love story movies.

Oldboy, Friend, JSA, Memories of Murder are all good. Actually Oldboy is great.

Koreh Sanyang (whale hunting...I and II) is '80s and kind of a love story but I really like it. Haven't been able to find a copy of I since coming back to the states...

"The Quiet Family" isn't bad...

Shoot me, but I liked Two-Cops (I)...a lot...

I really liked "Oh! Happy Day!" with Jang Na-Ra, she was really funny imo...
Kim Ki-Duk makes good movies, like Samaria and Bin Jip (3 Iron), though the former is definitely NOT a date movie! (Ching-gu/Friend) was not bad, plus you get to listen to that wacky Busan accent! I really want to see Welcome to Dong-Ma-Gol but my Korean isn't quite good enough yet without the subtitles.....oh ya and Tae-Gu-Ki is a good movie on the Korean war....Married to the Mob is pretty good though not original, I just like Kim Jong-Eun, she makes me giggle....hihihi

Is that a comedy and the main guy takes loads of bribes? It's a few years old now.

I would recommend Oldboy, Taeguki and Silmido.

I've seen 3-Iron, and I liked it in a weird way.

Did that guy get beat to death in the end and the girl just imagine he was alive. His ghost haunting the places they broke into together?

I like to get some movies like that. I'm taking them back for my cousins, parents and family who are Korean. They might enjoy watching some Korean films that depict S. Korea more precisely then the imported Korean channels. The stuff they show in the U.S. are all filmed on set.

Here is s list of some of the movies I suggest.

I Know Girl
The Turning Gate
Cracked Eggs and Noodles (cheesy story but I like it)
and 3-Iron

If you haven't seen it, check out "Please Teach Me English". It's a hilarious take on learning english at a hagwon from a Korean point of view.

When I first started, my students would always talk about Chingu and Shiri. I can't believe I haven't seen the latter yet.

When Koreans say 'Shiri', I always think they're saying something else with a 't' instead of an 'r'.

I saw shiri in the US before i came here, and fell asleep before the end. Never understood what was so great about it. Maybe I should watch it again.

"Chingu" was mediocre--but it's great if you've lived in Pusan, because it serves as a little tourist video. Some nice cinematography if you can believe it.

"On The Occasion Of The Turning Gate"--very pretentious and slow-moving drama, but it just might float your boat.

"Motel Cactus"--another arty film about various people renting the same room over and over again.

"Nabi"-weird, but strangely accessible film.

"Crazy Marriage"-Great script.

"Bad Guy"-pretty misogynist, but worth a rental.

"Flower Island"-a road movie for girls; and a lot of nice camera work.

Chingu is well worth it. Its a very good movie.

Silmido is ok too.

Public Enemy is allright as well.

Taeguki. Worth seeing

Crying Fist...good simple movie.

JSA...quite good.

The way home...simple story but excellent.

The Foul King...good movie, very funny at times.

Attack the Gas Station...hilarious (older however)

Old Boy...excellent movie.

There are a few more out there worth watching.

Call me cheesy, but I love watching all the Korean scary movies. Those high school girl ghosts are the freakiest ever. Some scary ones I saw:

Bunshinsaba

Into the mirror

Tale of Two Sisters (the best I've seen)

Phone

Acacia

The Eye and The Eye 2

Ju-on and Ju-on 2 (Japanese movies)

The Uninvited

Speaking of Juon and Juon 2, has anyone seen the remake of Juon called the Grudge? Pretty freaky story and even the popup suprises get you.

I'm seeing that tonight, how is it?

The was an outdoor movie festival last weekend and the local Korean friendship society presented "My Sassy Girl".
I think they managed to turn a whole audience away from Korean cinema that night.

I liked Spring Summer Winter Fall and Spring, but it's definitely an 'artsy-fartsy' movie that you have to be in the right frame of mind for.

'White Badge' is an older movie but a good one about Korea's Vietnam War experience. I suppose if you had to describe it you would call it the Korean "Deer Hunter".
