Hi there,

I tried to post this question on the Taiwan board but I guess you have to register seperately for that. So I'm gonna ask here cuz I know there are some people here that have lived in Taiwan before. Here it is:

I will be in Taiwan over-night waiting for my next flight to Thailand. I will be arriving around 10pm and then my next flight leaves at 8am the next morning. This is a perfect opportunity to go into the city and explore for a few hours. Can anyone tell me how far the distance is from the airport to Taipei city center? Can I easily take a bus or should I take a taxi? What is the average price for the taxi and about how long does it take to get there?

Also, I want to have a few drinks and check out the foreigner district if their is one. Can anyone recomend some good bars. I kinda wanna see the wilder bars too. Is American money ok or can I exchange some American for some Taiwan money easily at the airport at 10pm at night?
Maybe I should buy some Taiwan money here in Korea first? Hmm ..?? How much should I bring for a night out in Taipei?

I know that's alot of questions but I would really appreciate some wisdom here from those of you that have been there.

Thanks soooo much in advance!!

Taiwan is a bit like Korea in that bars and restaurants have very short life spans. There used to be a great nightclub called "B1" in Taipei, but it could be gone now. The deal was, you paid a pretty steep cover charge (ostensibly to rent a cup) and all your drinks were free (as long as you don't lose the cup). In Taiwan you'll be pleasantly surprised as most of the discos play real music, not this hip hop crap the Koreans seem to love.

I think the bus takes about 45 minutes from CKS airport to Taipei. I recommend "Happy Family" hostel, the location near the train station. You can buy NT$ (new taiwan dollars) in the airport. There's also a tourism counter where you can book a hotel/hostel room, even late at night.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not staying overnight, just gonna party all night and catch a flight early next day. Does anyone know about this place called Carnegies? I might go there but I'm not sure. I just want a place that is open really late and plays top 40 / hip hop / anything but techno type music. I kinda want to see the foreigner scene where many english teachers gather seeing as I want to teach here in the near future.

Any other suggestions would be really helpful....

Anyone know the approx price of a taxi from the airport to downtown and how much to return by taxi as well?

Thanks again....

Too much, you should take the bus. It won't delay you much because they're pretty regular, like every five or ten minutes. Most people flying to CKS are headed for Taipei.

Just got back an hour ago from 5 days in Taipei...the air-con in the buildings and subway is like the arctic and I caught a bloody cold!!! Don't dress assuming it's much warmer than Korea because it was colder last weekend. In other words, its fine outside but for the freezing buildings and MRT bring something warmer than only a tanktop and shorts like I did.

Anyway, my old Taiwan friends recommended me to arrange to pay NT$1000 with the Taxi driver beforehand to the airport, and wasn't a problem. If you go with the meter, sometimes its less but is usually up to NT$1500 they said.

Have fun!

If you have questions about Taiwan, just go to:

http://forumosa.com

All these Taiwan questions get kind of tiring after a while.
