So I'm ending my contract in 2 weeks and I asked my director today how much the buyout for a plane ticket will be as I am staying in Korea and going to a different job.

She handed me a piece of paper with the June 22 prices for airfares, which takes about 500,000 Won away from me? Is there anything I can do? Is this legal?

Refer to your contract..I am sure it covers airfare of some sort. Otherwise...never tell the school your plans. It does not matter how much you have do to get along or how many times you have bent over backwards to make wangja happy...you will almost always lose out. Wangja does NOT give a rat's a$$ about you. Only money. Which is obvious in your case seeing how you lost 500,000.
The other idea...go to the labor board.

I'm sorry Wangja....You're right...wangja does care...care about how much money the FT can make wangja and how much wangja can save by cheating the teacher's.

I think you mean wonjang....as in director of the hagwon

wonjang() = hagwon director

wangja() = a king or monarch

Make her book you a ticket for Halifax or Charlottesville or Perth or Coventry or wherever, let her see what it costs, then see if you can renegotiate.

I'd love too but she would not go for that. She knows where my home is and it would just be a waste of energy. I think this is something that I can just add to the blacklist post that I will be making in two weeks after I'm gone.

File a complaint with the labor board. It's simple as that. She already poisoned the employer-employee relationship by trying to play you for a fool with low season ticket prices.

Yeah, take the advice, the wonjangnims don't give a shit about you. They will use you and spit you out. They'll throw you out on the street when it suits them. Always remember and never give an inch.

If I take her to the labor board, what are the chances of winning? I'm moving to a different city 3 hours away. It might be impossible to fight her if there's a hearing. And if there is no chance, there is no point.

Also, can I take her to the labor board after my contract ends? I am at least getting my severence and if I fight her she will make it much more difficult than I'd want.

I would try to negotiate with her again, before going to the Labour Board.

Try calling three or four different travel agents, and have them email you with a CURRENT price for the flight. Email an actual request, and see what they get back to you with. It's going to be the most accurate price at the time.

Agree to take cash for the lowest flight offered. Heck, I'd even be willing to negotiate to take 100,000 LESS than the lowest ticket price available - at least that way you would be getting something much better than the 500,000 offered to you now.

Maybe she should just buy you a non-refundable, worst ticket (goes through Russia) she can find and let you sweat.

I would explain in a calm voice that it is not right to give me the value of a ticket during the slow period in Korea when I am going home during the busy time. Then if she says "take the money or I will buy a real ticket for you", take the money. Sometimes you can't win everything, but you can get most.

She doesn't have to give you the money , she can just buy you a ticket. she can then give you a ticket that is non-refundable, and dated for the afternoon that you finish at the school. Then she can give this ticket to you on the last day, therefore you have no time to change it and no way to refund it.

See......things can be worse. Explain and argue, but take what you can win.
