sure anti-racism funding should be kept, but you also have to admit that the work some organizations (read community groups) has a very beneficial effect on anti-racism campaigns without having to deal with red tape and bureaucracy.
Community groups themselves can do great grassroots work and can encourage understanding without needing government workers to control everything they do.

I remember traveling though the Yukon a few months back when I wanted to send a postcard at the place called Carcross in the Southern Lakes District. I had to buy a stamp at the post office when the postal worker told me an international post card stamp cost 68 cents. I handed the clerk the money which she then looked at me and said "no it's 79 cents, we have tax here in Canada!". I replied tax on postage stamps? Isn't a stamp a tax? She really didn't reply and took a long drag off from her player cigarette which was now almost burning her fingers. Taxing a tax seems sort of backwards.

Yup, there sure is an awful lot of stuff to hate about Canada, no doubt about it.

Even some stuff to love too.

Why do we still have the Queen on our money?

I guess it's because historically we have always done so.

Why do we have a governor general? I used to wonder about this too, but recently I can see certain advantages to our political system over the US'.

A governor general is a "NON-PARTISAN" representative of the government and the establishment of Canada. There is a kind of advantage to having someone who can perform certain PR type duties, such as meeting foreign dignitaries, opening museums, handing out awards etc.
It's nice to have someone represent the country who is above all the partisan bickering and issues that plague normal political figures.

It can be argued that this is by and large a waste of money, but I don't agree. I think that the job of governor general is largely mis-understood by most people.

I can't fully explain what I am trying to say here, but I hope that you will at least get some indication of what I mean.

Imagine this scenario:

What if you were awarded the Royal Order of Canada award and the only person who could present it to you were someone who you strongly disagreed with politically or even someone you dispised. Lyin' Brian comes to mind.

How embarrassing would this be if people refused to accept the awards because of political issues. Or what if foreign dignitaries refused to meet certain political leaders.

I'm sure there are other reasons why we have a Queen's representative and I hope someone out there who is better educated in Canada's government system will post something about that.

Who would want to recieve an award from a person like Bush?

Funny how the only person who bring up the Queen on a single domination would be a Brit. I wonder if he has any contention with the word "Great" preceeding Britain. I guess Britain just isn't good enough, so they had to add something to it. Should we also change South Croydon Council Estate to Great South Croydon Council Estate just to make the people who live there feel a little more proud of their homes?

Canada only exists because the US allows it to exist..

heh, just kidding.. I actually admire Canada's government in many ways.. definitely seems more open-minded. I even considered moving there at one point but it's just too friggin' cold.

but, c'mon the US could conquer it in a week.. can you imagine a Canadian Liberation Front? or would it be the Canadian People's Front?
