Pretty impressive story: never graduated from high school and managed to be the top-rated anchor on TV for around a decade.

Sure...impressive... I'm just as impressed as I am with Hollywood actors, many of which are related to someone in the industry (Christian Slater, Sean Penn, Robert Downey Jr., etc.). Did you know that Peter Jennings father was a big guy at CBC radio?

Sure, impressive...as long as you don't know daddy was a big guy at the CBC.

But didn't his first 'big break' come at CBC's rival CTV? And regardless of who his father was I think he proved without a doubt that he had the 'right stuff' for the job.

His father would not hire him-he didn't finish high school because he 'helped' people with their exams

Right, and I didn't get my PhD because I'm teaching my kid to be toilet trained. Excuses, excuses. Besides, I helped others with the high school exams, and I still graduated with honors.

Seriously. By your logic, barry bonds isn't that great because his father Bobby was a star baseball player before him.

Sure, his father's name got his foot in the door, but that didn't ensure him the level of success he achieved in his lifetime.

I think you must have some sort of brain damage to be still using this argument- your implication is that Peter Jennings was not a good anchor, was not a good reporter, and never should have been in the business anyway except for some aberration created by his father.
I didn't see his dad holding his hand for the last 30 years, did you?
Or have you come across a quote from anyone who knew him which said "Yeah, if weren't for his dad he never would have made it to anchor one of the top 3 networks in the US."

Seriously, the guy is dead now, WTF is the point of your beef?
That you never became an anchor? A celebrity?
Because you don't have a rich influential dad?

Well, cry me a freakin' river, fortunate son.

Okay, so you're saying it's a big deal to be able to read a teleprompter? Right... I bet there aren't many Mensa members in your familly.

Just in case you didn't know, Peter Jennings didn't think it was a big deal either. He knew his dad's name opened doors for him. He was smart enough to know that. I've seen him in an interview mention that his siblings, who are all highly educated individuals, kept reminding him of his lack of a high school diploma every time some article claimed he was an erudite. He understood some of it was hype. Obviously, you don't.

1. An anchor, especially one at that level, does not just read what is written. He writes some of what he speaks and edits most of it. Obviously it takes some skills since he lost his anchor position the first time he got it when he was only 26.

2. Consequently he had to report many years before he sat behind the desk again. He did an excellent job of covering the Munich Olympics crisis and I believe he was in Iran for the hostage crisis (but might be wrong about that one).

Sure, I knew that. Maybe I was being a bit dishonnest in my arguments because I recently saw this movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0357413/

Or maybe anchors really are sexist frat boys in polyester suits. Laughing

You find it boring, yet you keep coming back, reading, and then posting... Confused

Bottom line, the guy was unanimously considered to be well-liked, kind, excellent at what he did- why do some people feel the the need to piss on his grave?

I think the amount of hoopla is proportionate to his being a public figure for the last 30+ years.

I see you've gone from the "*yawn* I'm so bored with this thread" stance to the-great-humanitarian "let his family mourn in peace" stance.
Bravo.
