Gwangju,
Does the Sunshine policy technically still exist?
I was referring to it as no longer existing. I was thinking of it as Kim Dae Jung's foreign policy. I considered it as passing with his administration.
It clearly went south fast after Bush arrived in office. That's when it was "actually" finished. As such, I don't really see the post-2000 ecidence as relevant. |
It was my understanding the the Noh administration specifically said that they are continuing with the Sunshine policy. |

I agree with CC. I think they changed the name a little, but with no change in policy.

Yes it does. Co-operation bewteen the two Koreas has probably accelerated under Roh's stewardship. Roh's election platform was based on a pledge to continue engaging the north as Dae Jung did.

Then any such reference would be based on an untruth.

No it didn't. The Bush government's lack of regard for the sunshine policy hasn't substantially altered the Roh administration's position. The post - 2000 evidence is especially important in a climate where ambitious anti-US leftists in the Roh cabinet are covering up human rights violations eminating from the North, and detering downtrodden North Korean refugees from entering South Korea. I am more than a little shocked that you thought the sunshine policy had taken a nose dive when in fact the opposite is true. |

One problem with that logic, Joo...Chances are South Korea has the bomb, or the capacity to produce one within weeks. Thinking South Korean scientists aren't capable of producing nuclear weapons is rather naive, if not insulting. We're talking about 1940's technology, after all.
Besides, do you seriously believe they destroyed their research and/or whatever weapons they produced when they were caught developping them in the 70's?
Based on fairly recent news, it appears the research has continued in South Korea. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4004865.stm
Remember how nobody knew Pakistan had the bomb until they blew one up, despite the fact it was common knowledge they had developped nuclear weapons in the early 70's? |

I don't care if SK has nuclear weapons.
I do care if NK has nuclear weapons.
there is such a huge difference. |
