I've been to Tibet last year for 2.5 weeks

Potala is very impressive. I went there last March and spent a day wandering around the palace and didn't see one foreigner once i got inside. A very atmospheric place.

Bakhor Temple is great too. Also Nam Tso lake is impressive for its bleakness.

Once you hire a car and get out of the city with your driver it becomes really interesting. Take a drive to the Nepalese border via Everest if possible.

The Chinese area of Lhasa is exactly the same as various other small Chinese cities and is a very sad sight. Its especially offensive when you see how interesting the Tibetian side of the city is.

Don't underestimate altitude sickness. I got a nasty bout of it. Make sure you give yourself enough time at each place before going higher.

I met a small group of Japanese doing a three day tour of Tibet.
Day 1: Land in Lhasa and take a tour of Potala: Altitude 3800 - 4000 metres
Day 2: Go to Nam Tso lake: 5200 metres
Day 3: Go back to Lhasa and go home.

I think I could safely say that the night at 5,200 metres would have probably been one of the most uncomfortable nights they ever spent.
