I've finally gotten around to watching Taeguki (I virtually had to force the DVD place fella to rent it to me.... he was insisting that it wasn't in english and was no good to me..)

It was a really good movie but not quite up to my expectations.... but then movies rarely are... Despite all the time reminding me of another film (I kept expecting to see Tom Hanks appear yelling "Ryan?! Has anybody seen Ryan?!!". But i guess there are only so many ways to show war scenes and limbs getting blown off ect..) I was glad i saw it..

Just a couple of questions though.... Near the beginning when there were all those protest marches.... why were there so many signs written in English. I know the country was occupied by the americans during this time but surely the english craze hadn't developed that far back... My understanding was that the whole westernization of the country came during the post war resurrection.....

Secondly, why did the director use such shitty computer graphics for the scene where the planes straf the NK trenches?

Thirdly, How was a famed SK soldier (the older brother) able to become inducted and rise to a commmand position in the army so quickly??

And finally, and most importantly, what happend to the Lee family's dog (tied up and left during the evacuation).......... Was it barbequed by the invading troops?

I thought the movie was good untill the end then it just god weird.

Yeah, there were definitely some plot holes in it, but I enjoyed it anyway.



Speaking of plot holes- I loved Old Boy, but are we really expected to believe that O Dae Su and Lee Woo Jin went to high school together?

Choi Min Sik and Yu Ji Tae are 15 years apart in age, and they look it.

I also saw this movie for the first time last Friday. I had heard so much about it, I was quite looking forward to it. A movie critic friend of mine loaned me the tape and when I asked him how it was, he just kind of shrugged his shoulders and averted his eyes.

Watching it, I see why: it's really a movie only a Korean could love. It's a Korean family drama wrapped up in a war movie. By the time the slow-mo childhood flashbacks came around I was begging my friends to turn it off.

The opening scenes were outright stolen from Titanic, which gave me a good laugh and tells you where the director was coming from.

Pay attention to the viewer reviews (at the bottom and the link), particularly James K's...

I have found that- in general- the viewer reviews metascore for most movies on metacritic are pretty close to the critic reviews metascore.

In the case of Tae Guk I it's a 64 critics' score and a 94 viewers' score- somebody stuffing the ballot box?
