| Which do you prefer and why? I figure most people will prefer Uni. Jobs. In the universities around me, I see such a HUGE TURN OVER EVERY YEAR. It isn't funny. Hagwon's and Uni's IMHO tend to have the largest turnover's; something I don't like. |

If you are looking for long holidays and relatively little teaching time you want a Uni.
If you want no hassles about pay, set hours and people that will stick to the contract then you want public.
No one wants hogwans....99% of them are corrupt and the other 1% are evil.
I was having lunch with some friends on Saturday and one of the guys works in a hogwan. I said how is it? He said its a good hoggie.
Later he said that his boss makes him drink soju in between classes, the students do whatever they want, the FT has no authority and the kids can do whatever they want in his class.
I asked him why he said its a good hoggie....he said they pay on time  |

I have a wonderful situation, great boss, fabulous apartment and great kids (max of 8 per 50 minute class) and wonderful hours AND they pay me well..(I taught public school in the U.S. and it was so stressful.) OH..AND she (my boss) is a U.S. citizen (Korean born) who takes the heat of parents and unruly kids.  |

I beg to disagree...my hagwon is easily the best job i ever had..
I'll agree that the majority are corrupt and/or money-grabbing but the one I am working at now is fantastic...
-I have a hand in formulation of the ciriculum and a lot of my suggestions have been taken up
-Get paid very well for my work...a lot more than anything I have ever seen on daves job board and always on time
-If the student backchats me or is rude repeatedly then they will be booted from the school, no ifs/or buts...happened 4 times in 4 months..parents know this and are dying to get little Sumi or Min-ho into the hagwon
-Max class size is 6 students...this gives more quality time to each student and it is a lot easier for me to teach which takes off a lot of stress
-The wonjang studied in canada for many years, has a masters degree in Eng Lit from University of British Columbia so communication isn't a problem, also very tolerable of my requests and I am very tolerable of hers as well, if some extra work needs doing that she can't do then no problems
-My accomodation is fantastic...double bed, air con, brand new studio in a very quiet neighbourhood
-I get 17 holiday days a year(a lot for a hagwon and she has already insisted on me taking a couple - I nearly fell off my chair with that one)
-I only teach 20 hours a week(but this will possibly rise but no problem - I will do all I can to help make the hagwon more of a success)
These are just some of things i can think of off the top of my head..everything is legit, pension,tax,etc...
These kinds of jobs are never advertised, always word of mouth which is why you never seen them on the job boards here...I wouldn't have been able to get it if i was a newbie straight off the boat, it was all about timing and connections...granted it is a diamond in the rough and I won't leave for a long time as long as i am here
I have worked in 2 other hagwons and while no-where up to this standard treated me decently and never had any problems with pay and everything was always legit
Not all hagwon jobs are bad, just because you had a bad experience don't paint all the other hagwons with a similar shade of doom... |

I am currently in a private school now. I love it. Pay is always on time, they give us extra cash bonuses after the camps (not in the contract, they just do because we work so hard for them) 
You get your own classroom. Great people to work for. My wife and I signed a multiple year contract with them (we are VERY happy). |

Proof that you can run a hogwan successfully and professionally, and the other 90% of them are corrupt / incompetant money grubbing piss-pots of instutions. |
