I meant more in terms of an ongoing policy to isolate SK from the rest of the world - culturally, politically, economically. I think ESL teachers today serve the same role that missionaries did in the past. They act as a bridge between two cultures. We're kinda like cultural shock troops, sent in to lay down the groundwork of more meaningful ties between two cultures.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong here, but:
I'd imagine that at the time that Koreans were burning boats and attacking missionaries and whatnot, the missionaries were pretty much the only representatives of western culture that the average Korean was ever likely to encounter. So, if you were someone who wanted to thwart outside influences, attacking missionaries in and of itself would be enough.
In terms of Korea 2005: assuming Kim Jong Il isn't a complete moron(and most reports indicate he isn't), he's gotta realize that the most that's likely to result from any anti-ESL campaign is a tiny trickle of foreigners leaving the country, not some mass exodus. Plus, even if we ALL left tommorow, Korea would still have western influence coming out the wazoo. People would still be lined up around the block to see the latest Steven Spielberg masterpiece and buy the latest hip-hop CDs, not to mention devouring THE LITTLE PRINCE and JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL in world record numbers. So, in terms of a cost-benefit analysis, I don't think anti-ESL is really where KJI would be putting his money.
Probably, some of the people who are pro-unification-on-nork-terms are also people who are anti-ESL, but I'd imagine that they pretty much stumbled upon the latter issue by themsleves. |

Err, yes.
I should add that I've enjoyed the post-SPR Spielberg films that I've seen. But I wouldn't seriously describe any of them as masterpieces. |
