I'm off to Shanghai for three days next week. I'll be sufficiently immersed in the local situation during the day...
Can anyone recommend a western-ish pub for an evening beer?

O'Malley's is a decent yet highly priced Irish Bar towards the French concession area..

Number 5 is right along the Bund.. decent place.. happy hour.. pool table.. darts..

There was someplace called " _____ American Cafe" too .. the "____" being someone's name that I forget with a moment (started with an M I think).. food was GREAT.. TVs everywhere... Expats of all walks of life...

After going to Shanghai, you wont want to return to Korea.. ever....

I liked to go to Zapatas near the French Quarter (?) but anyway if you're wanting information about it, www.shanghaiexpat.com/ or shanghai.asiaxpat.com/ or www.expatsh.com/ are all good places to start. There are alot more expats in Shanghai, and it is much much more foreigner-friendly.

It's just another big city.. after a while they all start to resemble each other... If you're looking for something drastically different from Seoul, Shanghai isn't it...

How about places to go out in that other big Chinese city, Beijing? Anyone know some good spots to have a wild night out there?

Shanghai has a bunch of bars of course, but these ones are usually good bets...

Try Mural, near Yongjia road and Hengshan road. Funky atmosphere and a cool mix of people, plus they have a good band on Wed and Sat night, and all you can drink Friday for 100 RMB (about 12 USD) - they have a website, do a search on "Mural Shanghai"

Another good bar is Noah, at the top of a hotel/hostel on 73 Fuzhou road. Spectacular views and decent burgers, plus its near the Bund and People's Square, both okay areas for a stroll.

Windows is at Jing An subway station, upstairs in a mall. Drinks are about 1 US dollar each and its a good place to pick up, so I hear.

I wandered around forever trying to get a beer in Shanghai, don't know if it was just bad luck, everything was shut for New Year, or the nightlife areas are very segregated but it was literally hours of walking.

However, on my travels I did see a monkey!

cool city.

I agree. Like Seoul, what you see in Shanghai is the past 10-20 years of hardcore urbanization. Save for the French Concession and the old buildings along the Bund that are 100 years old. I went on two tours of that city and found a lot less Chinese historical sites than in Seoul. You'll like it if you are there for the party and business prospects, etc...But you have to leave the city and go to nearby Hangzhou or Suzhou to start seeing the really old historical stuff in any form of abundance.
