I taught in Korea for a couple of years before moving back to Canada. One of the stereotypes about Koreans that I heard of is that they "always travel in packs" or "stick to their own" when living abroad.

However, last month I met a Korean family living here in New Brunswick. Since Korean immigrants are rarity here I took an interest in them (maybe the mother could make me some Gimbap! Razz ). After talking to them for a while I asked if there were any other Koreans in the city. They said there were a few but they tried to avoid them. The son (who is in middle school) told me that a couple of Korean students at his school were always trying to get his family's phone number. I never dug any deeper but I found it odd that they were so determined to avoid other Koreans.

I have a Korean friend who lives in Japan now. She is interested in coming to Canada to study English. I told that Vancouver was her best bet but she said that she wanted to go to a city that does not have many Koreans.

What town, catman? Moncton? There have been Koreans in NB for quite a long time. My parents bought their first house from a Mr. Kim in 1971.

But, now it seems there is a considerable number of Koreans going to NB. My wife told me she's even seen NB mentioned on Korean TV as being one of the next hotspots for Koreans immigrants. NB is actually seeking Koreans.

Can you delve into this a bit more? BTW, Which city are you in? (I'm also a herringchocker, BTW.) Smile

Yeah... I was wondering that to. My K-Gal and I are in Miramichi. I think she had met one other Korean lady in Moncton but beyond that...

In Miramichi? We're practically neighbors (hint: How sha going?). We went through Miramichi this summer on several occasions, stopping at the Irving on our way to and from Moncton. I wish I had been able to go to the Irish festival.

I met a Korean girl recently who studied in Australia and pretended to be Japanese as most of her classmates were Koreans - she became good friends with a few Korean girls and only spoke English with them (and they with her) and kept this up for her 3 months stay! Razz

Waterbaby, haven't heard from you in a long time!
Where have you been?

Someone on this message board suggested that trick for foreigners in Korea wishing to avoid Koreans speaking to them in Korean: if you have some proficiency in a third language, pretend to be a native speaker of that third language and pretend not to know English.

The people of Argentina are lighter-skinned than most other native speakers of Spanish, so I have sometimes wanted to pretend to be from Argentina. I haven't had the confidence to try that, though.

For the most part she finds them friendly, but doesn't really have a lot in common with them. (She's not too keen on Canadian Idol or country music bars, although she did express an interest last night in playing TV Bingo.) but there's just not a lot of people our age left in this city so it's hard to meet good friends.

He he.. she will be in the bingo halls before you know it!!! don't get in the way of a women wanting to play bingo in the Maritimes.. Not a lot of young people left in any maritime city.... that's why the whole East Coast is desparate for immigrants.. to replace all the people who are leaving.

Regardless of NB claiming to be seeking immigrants... government says one thing and does the opposite. They also whine about the problem they have filling teaching and nursing positions: so why every few years do they do rounds of lay offs?

There is a program in place now to attract Chinese investors. Any who wish to partner up with a local firm and invest $120k while still maintaining a minority control can get their permanent residency fast-tracked. The company next door to me has apparently gone this route. Still, I posted a while back on how the Chinese students in Saint John were being pelted with eggs and profanity at bus stops from yokels driving by... and SJ is our second largest city. It could be a backlash against "too much" investment, if there is such a thing, as newspaper stories had been talking about a Chinatown growing up in Saint John with the Chinese buying up property there, hand over fist.

On a positive note, the Germans in the bakery accross the street just passed their citizenship test last week so we are getting some immigrants.
