University Students Shun Political Rallies
In the past, it was common for Korean college students take part in the pro-democracy movement against the previous authoritarian regimes of the 1970s and the 1980s.

However, now college students are more interested in getting a job and their personal affairs than larger political issues. Yoon Han-ul, the president of the Yonsei student body, said that the school should not allow progressive groups to use the campus for political purposes. He said that without a consensus of its students, it cannot allow a politically-motivated rally on campus that may damage school facilities, such as grassy areas, lecture rooms, could distract students from their studies.

Baek Yi-joo, a junior at Kyung Hee University, said that many college students are losing interest in politics mainly due to individualism as things have changed recently. She said that although the university is becoming just a means to employment, this is a reflection of the social reality in particular, the tight job market because they pursue mainly individual goals.
