If that's you in your avatar, your mother must've been. |

Does it not also mean "That is damn nice of you"?
That's what I have gathered from my interaction with folks at the establishment here. |

"Kombay!"
"Wihaya!"
or more likely
"One shot!" |

I think you mean JI HWA JA!!!
(which literally means- "let's all get stinking drunk, fight, throw up, and pass out, not neccessarily in that order!" Amazing language, eh?) |

really? I always thought that was roughly the right pronounciation and it meant "To your health!"
You learn something every day
What's the hangeul for it? |

It's a little funny, in that if 'Gumbae' is "cheers", then 'Ji hwa ja' ȭ is "Bottoms up!".
But I don't think that's its literal meaning. I don't think there is a literal meaning (which is why I wrote what I did).
A better way of explaining it is that it might be (or might not- I could be wrong here) the same way somebody might say instead of ...
Uh, like saying "okely dokely, neighborino!" instead of yes/okay/alright/certainly.
I got all my info from drunks, so if I'm wrong blame them! |

What Swiss James heard was most likely "Ͽ!"
Ͽ ͡for;for the sake[good, benefit] of;in the interest(s) of;in behalf of;in favor of;
In other words, "To [whatever]!" |

yeah that's the one dogbert- but then shouldn't it be followed by something else?
"Ͽ Ϻ!"
or something? I only ever seem to hear the first bit- although maybe I'm already halfway down the glass before the end. |

I've wondered about that too. Maybe it's thought best to leave it open to each individual drinker's interpretation. No idea. |

Yeah, I've only heard old, un-cool dudes toast that way, actually.
What's the hip toast? Don't leave us in suspense! |
