Somehow some Korean netizens managed to convince Google Earth that the Sea of Japan should be called the East Sea.



Do people here think it should be called the East Sea, and not the Sea of Japan?

I think it makes no sense outside of a Korean context. It isn't East of Australia, for example. I'd rather is be called the Korean East Sea, or, better yet, something both Japan and Korea can appreciate - the Rice Sea, or maybe the Ramen Sea.

However, the East Sea isn't the only subjectively named sea. There's also the North Sea, between the UK and Norway. Here's interesting information about its history, from Wikipedia:

Its name origins from the Frisians living directly to the south of the North Sea, who also distinguished the East Sea (Oostzee, the Baltic Sea), the former South Sea (Zuiderzee, today's IJsselmeer) and the today reclaimed Middle Sea (Middelzee).


It sounds like the Frisians were unaware of the existence of the entire rest of the world, and I feel the same about Koreans who support the name "East Sea". Rabid nationalism will lead to arbitrary rigidity, that's for sure.

I say just call it the "Medial Japrean Sea" or the "Medial Korpan Sea". Rock,scissors, paper to decide.

Even better they should call it the PACIFIC OCEAN!!!

ONe of my students (a very wise CEO) made the argument for The East sea.

He basically said that the term "East" is not necessarily refering to it's position relative to Korea, but rather in it's general area in the world. Just like the terms "The Middle East" and "The Far East", he thought that this sea was an important part of "The East".

Incidentally had an interesting thing happen on the (korean owned) Fukoka-Busan ferry. Somehow some floating garbage clooged up the jet intake jsut as we were leaving Japan leaving us bobbing on the water for half an hour... The english announcement left us with no doubt that the cause was the dirty rubbish filled japanese harbour water.....

I wonder how much of this sea-flotsam drifted over from korea...
