I'm back in the States and trying to use the desktop computer I didn't think about for a year. I don't remember the password I put on it (it has Windows 2000). What are my options?

Basically OP your system is exactly the way you left it, only your OS is locked. What this means is that you can just boot off the cdrom drive and thus load your own OS into RAM. What that means is that you put the windows CD into the harddrive, then depending on whether your computer is set to boot up from the MBR or from the CD drive, you should just load your new OS. This setting is determined in the BIOS at boot up, but the computer will usually boot automatically from cdrom first.

This will give you the ability to retrieve files etc... Eventually thou you can just do a full install (don't format the harddrive). This should leave you with all of your files intact, but your programs will be gone (I reckon). I haven't actually done this with windows recently but I've done something similar.

try this -

Quote:
Windows XP Home does not let you log in with the Administrator account normally. To access it, you must restart the computer in safe mode, a special 'minimal' mode used to correct errors caused by third-party software, among other things.

To enter safe mode: Restart your system. Immediately after the POST screen, press F8 a few times to bring up the XP advanced options menu. Select the 'start Windows XP in safe mode' option.

Once safe mode has loaded, login with the username 'administrator.' The password is blank by default. You can now change user passwords by going to 'start\control panel\user accounts.' Reboot normally when you are done.

Glad to hear it. There's only one good reason for going to a hospital, and that's to pick up a nurse.
