Canadians are obsessed with our maple leaf patches and tatoos because, well, I dunno if you've been paying attention to world politics in the last few years, but the US doesn't exactly have the best reputation lately and we look like them and sound like them, so we don't wanna get confused with being them. After Vietnam and Irag, the rest of the world for some strange reason have been getting the impression that our southern friends are imperialist megalomaniacs who will stop at nothing to enforce their capitalistic values upon the rest of the world.
It's not an inferiority complex - it's just that we are a totally separate peoples in a different nation with different values, and there's nothing wrong with being proud of that! I like Americans a lot, but we are different and we have to advertise that.

Canada is the greatest ever because its different from India which has the caste system.. not to mention India is building up nukes for a fight-out with Pakistan (which is just wrong!). Canadians love Pakistan, as they love all people - except for Indians because they are different - and Canadians need to be proud and tell people about this.

Canada never had the caste system or really wanted to nuke Pakistan either and thats what makes Canada great.

Alias:

People who wear a patch of one country to justify they aren't a member of another country = loser. How many times do I have to say this before you understand? Or do you prefer to troll? You asked me the same thing last time I brought this up.

Seems like you like picking apart my opinions, how about your present your own opinions. It isn't as if you can prove my opinion wrong, as there is no right and wrong when it comes to opinions.

I am done replying to you until you start making some opinions of your own.

Not just taking issue with patriotism and nationalism generally (which is generally ugly, everywhere), but U.S. flag waving must be particularly "insipid" as well? That's probably why there are issues between Canadians and Americans on this board.

It's not the Maple Leaf on the backpack that irritates me as much as it is the chip on the shoulder that it seems to signify. I usually steer clear of it when I see it (I learned that habit here, in Korea): what's the point in hearing yet another Canadian tell me how evil and terrible the United States is? (It's a boring, predictable, broken-record-like conversation.)

I agree with Gopher. Having been around a couple of Canadians, their opinions about things tend to be very subjective when it comes to questioning Canadian values and traditions. Without having said a word in regards to any type of comparision what-so-ever about America, I must admit, These Canadians jumped the gun and began right out on how "America" was so bad when compared to Canada.

OUT OF NO WHERE PEOPLE! It's either that:

A - They have an inferiority complex
B - Have had Canadian vs. American conversations before
C - Just want to talk about how....GREAT Rolling Eyes Canada is when THEY can't even get a job in their own "great" country, or hack it for that fact. I mean come on people....let's get real. If things were so great in one's mother country, would yall be here......ME THINKS NOT!

Now....if you are here for the following reasons then dude....more power to you:

A - you have been wanting to travel and this is a good way of financing it
B - you have a degree RELEVANT to doing this and thus have been wanting to do this for sometime
C - being here because your spouse is here

You do have a pot to piss in when it comes to this debate. HOWEVER....if you are here for one of THESE following reasons, then you really don't have any credibility when it comes to this topic:

A - Here because you can't find a job back home (any country)
B - Are running away from something (al beit criminal, financial, etc.)
C - Are here because you couldn't fit into society back home

If you are one of the latter A, B, C's then how do YOU figure you have any credible say in this matter. "oh yes....I forgot...everyone's entitled to his/her own opinion...true....but then you become a hypocrite, thus eliminating any type of credibility what-so-ever.

I am sure there are "other" reasons why people are here: military, etc. But....I have clumped together the MAIN reasons why people come to this country and teach. So....anyways...sorry for the rambling...carry on. Laughing Cool

You sir are the one not thinking.

There is a difference between waving a flag on a holiday in one's own country, and wearing a flag on your backpack to signify you are NOT from another country.

Want me to clarify more why those people are losers?

If it wasn't for America, Canada's economy would be CRAP. Let me repeat that: Without American trade with Canada, Canada would be a country like Korea, possibly worse.

Without America's military presence, Canada would actually have to throw more than the minium amount required for our armed forces. America SAVES THE CANADIAN GOV'T MONEY...that they pour back into programs that HELP YOU!

Those Canadian flag guys are losers because they turn their backs on the very people who made it possible for them to be as free as they are and live as comfortably as they do. People who always take the benefits, but who are unwilling to sacrifice are losers.

Lastly, if it wasn't for America being so powerful, do you Canadian flag people honestly think you would have a job in Korea? Koreans want to learn AMERICAN ENGLISH. Not British English but AMERICAN ENGLISH. By wearing that patch, you are smacking the face of those who made it possible for you to work over here.

I think some of you who reply against my posts don't think much. There are two groups of patch wearers. Those from any country, who wear it when travelling around, but do so not to seperate themselves from another group of people, but to be recognized as who they are (nationality). The other group, that is the group we are talking about in this thread. They are the ones who wear the patch to NOT BE AMERICAN. It is those people who are the losers.

Christ, why do you care so damn much about a flag? Do you freak out when you see Belgians wearing their flag? A New Zealander?

It's our flag, we like it, piss off.

Is it possible that the more you call our country a piece of crap, the more we will wear the flag?

Is it possible that we might want to set ourselves apart from a country that does nothing but insult us?

Besides, Americans wear flags on t-shirts and hats all the damn time.

I don't usually like to speak for others, but im confident i can speak for 95% of American teachers in Korea (myself included) when I say that prior to coming to Korea we didnt have much opinion of Canada or Canadians either way. I never met a Canadian before coming here.

Then out of the blue I have to listen about the War of 1812, handguns, no health care. etc.. I learned to loathe these Canadians only after being in Seoul.

So those canadians who think that Americans hate you, get over yourself. Except for a few border towns. Americans dont care about you one way or the other. You just dont matter much.

yeah, this is true. sometimes I think, "man, some of these canadian teachers are ungrateful. they're riding gravy train because they happen to share our accent, and all they do is badmouth us. we're waging wars, building nukes, and cutting down forests all to protect american wealth and dominance. and what are they doing up there? smoking doobies and ice fishing?"

but then i calm down because i realize that i personally played no part in WW2, the cold war, or microsoft.

but what about this idea: if you're canadian and teaching english in korea, you can't complain about all the big bad american corporations, because those corporations made your accent lucrative.

what do yall think about that? just a theory.

Very well put. I like the last idea. However, is America the only country that sits there building nukes, cutting down the forests, and waging war? Ummm...let's see.....How many nuclear powers are there and how many want to be one (and are trying to be one for the WRONG REASONS, ummm....do you use paper)? hmmm......, the waging war part you've got me. That is a reason I cannot wait for Bush to get out of office. Makes me sick that man!!

Now you got me feeling homesick. I've got the picture. All I need is the ice-cold (naturally) Labatt's Club and I'm set. For those of you not in the know, a Labatt's Club is NOT a brewery-sponsored seal swatter. It's a beer.

The main argument that you are making is that those Canadians who wear the patch on their backpack are losers if they do so to distinguish themselves from Americans. But you seem to think this represents most of those who wear the Maple Leaf. How do you know this is the case? My guess is that you haven't talked to that many of them. Is the South African who I saw with the SA flag on his backpack trying to distinguish himself from Americans? I don't know. I'm trying to understand the double standard you have.

The problem is that you just make broad generalizations. Like "Canadians won't fight for anything". So what "fighting" do you want us to do? You never answered.

You said that Canadians keep electing the same corrupt government. Yet, other countries do the same. Including our neighbours to the south and in Europe. You never addressed that point either.

So you want my opinion. OK.
My opinion = bitter angry Canadian conservatives really loathe their country right now and hate being reminded of it. This is why they become irate at the site of the Maple Leaf while abroad. They are ashamed of their country and those liberals who are proud of it.

How's that?
