No beating around the bush: I think it would be both educational and humorous to teach children words that would fly over the heads of most adult English-speakers. And I think it's empowering to the kids; I believe they would think it kind of cool to know a few sophisticated words (the intent being that the kids are aware that these are tough words).

So here's the proposal: every day, as long as there's the tiniest bit of interest, I'd like to post a word that teachers here can use to teach their students. From past experience, I know that sometimes the last 5-10 minutes of a class can be "garbage time," where Hangman rules supreme. This could be an alternative. Plus, I think it would be fun for teachers here to share their experiences on how well a particular word went over in class.

Others can of course post their own word, but I think for uniformity's sake it would be best to have a single word for each day. Imagine the possibilities.

Wednesday, August 24, 2002:

legerdemain ( P ) Pronunciation Key (ljr-d-mn)
noun.
Sleight of hand.
A show of skill or deceitful cleverness: financial legerdemain.

For native English-speaking children, it's not tough to be subjected to challenging words, but I suspect Korean English learners receive too much by-the-numbers vocabulary. Of course, teaching legerdemain to a class of pre-schoolers won't fly, so discretion on the teacher's part is certainly necessary.

Fair enough points made - therefore I decided to remove this statement.

I think oligarchy does go over most heads--maybe a nod or a smirk that you're using a word the person doesn't know. And try autarky! Kim Il Sung may have made juche more popular than its English equivalent.

You guys should really read more books, man. I think that your assumptions about vocabulary probably derive from your reading habits (is everything you read something you found by googling it?).
