I know its been discussed somewhere, but can't seem to find the thread.

I have a couple weeks available at the end of August.. and flights are too expensive! About 800,000 won from Seoul!

There are ferry boats that go up there.. and curious if anyone has looking into it before.. and would have an idea on prices and how to go about booking one of these.

Also, if anyone else has time in August and considering the same trip.. let me know!

Thanks.. its perfect.

Trying to decipher some of the Korean.. and can't quite get a sense of it. Maybe someone will come along and do a bit of translating on prices.

The website is a great start! Thanks again.

Found another website in English:

http://www.vostexp.vl.ru/english/ticket/ship.htm

$300 roundtrip to Vladivostok by ferry.. NOT BAD!

$238 roundtrip if you sleep in the largest rooms with everyone on the boat. Incredible!

Makes Korea look like Disneyland.

Dangerous eh? Well that really blows. We were considering a motorcycle trip using the ferry and then doing some riding in Russia....

Sorry to spoil your plans Tiger.

A friend and I had a similar idea. We're only an hour away from Sokcho and the Dong chun Ferry terminal.

We drove up to get tickets, but they're booked solid for the entire month of August.

I'll discard that idea then.. just as well.. the visa alone was going to take 2-3 weeks (not much time to actually take the trip figuring I'm back in a month).

Depends what your level of adventure is. One man's danger is another man's adventure. It's a nice place to get yourself arrested for being in the wrong place at the... well, at any time, and there is no indication of that being "the wrong place" until the police take you away and incarcerate you. The good news is, you can bribe them to release you. (Note: "can" does not mean "will definitely be able to"... it just means there exists the possibility)

I had a great vacation there not so long ago.

Drank in public, talked to strangers, was out after dark, not a problem at all.

How does this ferry work? These instructions aren't very good.

Zarubino is between Sokcho and Vlad and it looks like and extra $20.

Quote:
. SCHEDULE (from 6th of November, 2003)

1. Arrival to Zarubino: Tuesday - 09:00
Departure from Zarubino: Wednesday - 18:00 (local time)

2. Arrival to Zarubino: Friday - 10:00
Departure to Vladivostok: 14:00
Arrival to Vladivostok: 19:00 (local time)

Departure from Vladivostok: Saturday - 10:00
Arrival to Zarubino: 15:00
Departure from Zarubino: 19:00 (local time)

3. Arrival to Sokcho: Sunday, Thursday - 10:00
Departure from Sokcho: Monday - 14:00
Thursday - 16:00

I want to leave on a Friday. It looks like it leaves on Friday at 10:00, arrives the next day at 15:00 in Zarubino and then leaves again for Vladivostock at 6 PM. Am I close?

I found this but it doesn't seem to confirm...

Quote:

Sokcho, Korea to Zarubino, Russia
Ferry leaves Monday and Wednesday at 2 pm and Friday at 3 pm.
Ferry arrives Zarubino at 10 am
Travel to Vladivostok by bus takes about 4 hours. Note that Zarubino is in the Primorye area of Russia. Although there are plans to extend service to Vladivostok, there is no indication as to when this might occur.

This is turning out to be a pain

To go to Russia you need an

1)invite letter - easy
2)visa - medium
3)voucher - !@#$%!@$@

You are supposed to have all of your time accounted for, every night reserved, paid for and booked. There is a way to only reserve but not book/pay for but the only people that want to cooperate are the high end places.

I heard all that about St Petes and Moscow too and consistently wandered around at the wee hours of the morning drunk and usually alone with no problems.

Your one sentence would imply that Korea is dangerous (and that Vladivostok is even worse). Is that what you meant? Korea is Disneyland.

During my previous tour of Korea - I worked with some Russian teachers (at a language college) - and they also reported that Vlad was a dangerous place. Their spin was that so many people were sent to prison camps in the eastern part of the country - and were released when the USSR went belly up - and stayed in those areas. Thus a very high percentage of criminal element. Criminals + cr*p economy = trouble.
