Once you have the bike, why not waste the rest of your cash on a 1971 Pontiac Trans-Am and a radio-controlled car.

Just like this guy:

Captain Kirk is right, it is insanity to buy new and pay new-bike prices. And particularly here in Korea with the higher import duties on top of it all. And the same goes for cars, whether imported or domestic. But most people have that "gotta buy new" attitude about their vehicle, and God bless them for it. Creates jobs, pushes development, and most of all, without them how am I ever going to buy used? Actually, the very first time I went to a BMW Bike dealership in Seoul, all I could afford was one of their cheaper helmets... about 600,000 won on sale as I recall.

Igotthisguitar, have we started an avatar trend? You've got your Baby Avatars, your Bre@stalicious K-Chicks Gone Wild Avatars, your "Ooh! Ooh! It's a Planet!" Avatars, your Babbling Brook of Nature's Tranquility Avatars, your Comic Strip Avatars.... but is Dave's and the world ready for....

Mediaeval Restraint Avatars?!!! Twisted Evil

I freely admit to having a strong bias/being prejudiced against Harleys. I guess you either love em or you hate em.

Well, i think a mid-life crisis is a good sign, in a way; It means you have the time and the intelligence to contemplate where life has led you so far, plus the money to foolishly spend on selfish extravagances. Stupid people don't think to have mid-life crises, and poor people are too busy trying to make ends meet.

Just remember, Steroids, whatever you do and whatever you buy there is only one thing to remember:

Right. I respect the badge, the history, the ethos and all. But leaving aside all comparisons of the machines, the value, etc., if you just can't see yourself on one of them without snickering at yourself, then why not buy a Kia or GM Daewoo subcompact?

More than any other brand, I think the stigma of Harleys has less to do with the bikes than with their owners. And like most stigmas, it's not really a fair one, but it's one that a lot of us find hard to contend with. There's the grey-haired pony-tailed gang with their tattoos and their filterless Camels. They be cool. They be iconic. And I'll never be one of them until I get a proper beer gut & pair of sunglasses. Then there's Hell's Investment Bankers, and that's what I'm afraid I'd become.

And I think that's where my bias stems from- where I am there is very little space between organized crime biker gang rider and investment banker rider. The vast majority around here are the investment banker/ civil servant riders who seem to think their money has bought them instant respect and a bad-ass reputation.

Shocked
I don't think there are any beer-googles in the world strong enough to turn those hags into hotties.

("beer-googles"? goggles?)

If you had to kiss one of the women in Igotthisguitar's photo full on the lips, who would it be?

I'm thinking the one in the uppermost left corner. Or perhaps the uppermost right corner. Not a very easy or pleasant choice.

A mid-life crisis is a luxury, then? Never thought of that. More intense with the self-involved? I mean if you've got a family and are connecting left and right with good deeds are you gonna think about yourself and how things might have been? Supposedly family life is being at home. With your family and yourself. Maybe self-involved people half-heartedly into the family life, a sort of dysfunctional deal and off they go escaping into their little mid-life crisis and no-one can stop them from buying a Harley.

There's a Korean in the adult class who said that if he bought a motorbike his family would disown him, that is his wife and kids. Kind of funny.

At the Harley shop in Seoul A WHEEL, chromed front wheel with four big spokes costs 1,500,000 won.

Isn't motorbiking about being used, dirty, independent, scruffy, and so on? A rugged sort of thing? For never do wells who have an appointment with a head injury, which only makes them love bikes more? Nahh, but 30 million for a motorbike? Why not get a used one and donate 28 million to Africa?

Well, even buying a used Harley (or BMW) you're not going to have anything like 28 million won left out of 30 million. Unless you're just buying the official saddlebags. I've seen all types of Harley owners in Korea, but I haven't met the 'mid-life crisis' type yet, though I'm sure they're out there.

The first Korean Harley owner I knew was my old landlord (landlady's husband, more accurately) who was in his late 60s and well past any mid-life crisis that he probably never had. One day he came roaring home on a used Korean police Harley, paying about 9 or 10 mil. as I remember. The second Korean Harley owner I met was the kid brother of a stone-paver cutter/installer. The brother, then in his mid-20s, had been saving up for years for a Harley, which was a painfully slow process for a high school graduate who lived & worked in utter Dic kensian squalour, making tiny little metal parts and attachments for watches & jewelry. Once he reached 30 mil. won, off he trotted to the Harley dealership.

There's a sizable pack of Korean Harley-heads in my general vicinity who I'd describe as Hell's Office Building & Noraebang Owners. They might be the 'mid-life crisis' types, but really, I think it's more a case of a lot of middle-class Korean men finally being able to afford a bit of the Hollywood lifestyle they grew up envying.

I mean a used, bigger bike. Like I paid 1,500,000 for a Virago, 750cc. Honda Shadows are 750's and can be got cheap. I've never driven a Harley. I wonder why people pay so much money. Not cynically, just wonder. Do you know? It's a highway cruiser, made for going down the road.

If you want to spend a lot of money on a high performance thing like a Ducati Monster, that seems different.
