So I'm going to Busan with some friends this weekend. We're planning on hitting the beach. I tell the girlfriend this morning. She thinks I'm an idiot "choa choa choa! appo! you sick! cold!". The fact that its like 27 degrees here means nothing apparantely. The calendar says its not summer any more, so I can't go to the beach. She genuniely thinks I'm going to catch a cold because its so chilly haha. I'm not about to get into explaining that you don't catch colds from being cold though.. that is too much silly foreign thinking.. Also, I'm not going to be cold, because its friggen HOT.
I love this country, but sometimes I just want to slap people for saying dumb stuff like this..

Thankyou. But in the mornings I intend to be in nice cozy bars drinking soju until about 10am. So I'll miss the nippy mornings hopefully.

This is a good example of Korea's "four seasons". It's not swimming season or beach season now.
I once had a Korean female friend tell me that I coudn't wear my winter coat down the street as people would laugh at me...winter is over.
Never mind that I was freezing. |

I like the weather now. Not cold, not hot, just right. It's sufficiently cool enough at night now for me not to turn the aircon on. Bliss.

Aircon.. that must be nice.
Last week I nearly suffered fan death. Shortly after waking I noticed smoke coming out of my bedroom, I decided to go have a look and it was pouring out of my fan. It seems my fan suffered fan-death. I'm glad summer is over now. Not even having a fan would be sucky.

This weekend may very well be the last beach weekend of the summer... The weather will be fine for another month, but beach season, unfortunately, is on it's way out... In addition, this is the conversation I had with a student a couple of days ago...
Me: So, did you make it to the beach at all this summer?
Student: No... ...
M: Well, perhaps you could go this weekend...
S: Teacher, no! It's too cold!
M: What?! Too cold?! Come one, no it's not...
S: Well... ...
M: It's still perfect weather for the beach... right???
S: I, uh, guess so...
M: Sure it is... Why does beach season have to end so early?
S: Actually, I don't know, teacher...
M: It doesn't make much sense, does it?
S: No, it doesn't...
M: So, gonna go to the beach this weekend?
S: Yeah, I'm going to try... |

Change of seasons and little natural events that indicate same. Like wasps wanting in. I think this happened back in Canada in the Fall. It's going on today. Had one coming into the apt. And when I got to school there's one going into the school. And the other foreign teacher saw in her apt.
Love fall, high blue sky and no bugs or heat. |

Actually the beach season has little to do with summer being over and more to do with the fact that there are no more lifeguards at the beach after August 31st (or before July 1st).
It is definitively warm enough to swim however!

This phenomenon of personal warmth being independent of the actual temperature is one of the odder things about Korea. I've gone to the extent of taking a thermometer into class and pointing out that it is 30 degrees in the classroom; if you students would like to take your coat off and stop sweating, it would be OK with me. 90% refused. It's too cold. |

It really is one of the things I still can't grasp after 5 years in Korea. In the Korean mind, if it's winter then it's cold. Inside or outside. Doesn't matter what the thermometer says. |

Bullshit Homer, get a grip you really do see everything through rose colored glasses don't you. As ALL Koreans know there is a specific swimming seasons that have nout to do whether there are lifeguards around or not. Most of Korean beaches don't even have lifeguards around only the most popular. |

Well,
Fidel...no rosy glasses here.
Calm down little dude.
I am just putting in my two cents and there is an official swimming season here my friend. At haeundae in Busan they have life guards and or people there to supervise during the swimming season and not out of it.
People still swim however, even in June. |

Swimming in Hyundae was pretty bad about two weeks ago.
i went down there.. and apparently there is a really deep dropoff.. and the currents are really strong.. you can feel them.
Also tons of rocks right where the water comes in.. the waves hit hard and push rocks up against your legs. I didn't quite expect that.
Its not really a beach that suitable for swimming (or it wasn't 2 weeks ago).. maybe something changes at different times that makes it better.. not sure.
For the most part, everyone just rented inner-tubes and the life guards would watch them and blow the whistle if people got off the inner-tubes. The innertubes bump into each other and its the only saving grace of the beach and going into the water. |

Haeundae is pretty horrible in the summer, if you're in Busan try the other beaches - i quite like Songjong and it's very close to Haeundae, but nicer. |
