My room in Seoul has a data port in it already. I was told from a co-worker that I could just plug in and it would automatically connect to the Internet, and that I would get a bill once a month if I did so. But, when I pluged in to the connection although my computer says its connected it does not draw a IP addy.

I even tried connecting to the same connection, which I took out of another computer where the Internet was working properly, and it did not obtain an IP then either.

Any suggestions?

You need to configure your computer to accept your ISP's dns and dhcp config...

this means that your internet provider is probably sending you your IP address, but your computer is saying 'no thanks, I have one already'

what operating system are you using ??
try searching google for "connecting to the internet" + 'your operating system name here'

If theres a data port allready there to deliver internet then it sounds to me as though its not so much of an isp thing.

Maybe it's just building wide internet using NAT. Sounds to me like this is not a dynamic IP problem.

... is that the exact response given ? or just something like it ?

I find that cutting and pasting the response into google is usually the best thing in these situations. There's invitably someone out there who's written the same text into a forum somewhere and has gotten a reply ...

If your building comes with a network, then there should also be a sysadmin to tell you what to do to get connected.

Start / Control Panel / Network Connetions / Local Area Connection / Properties / Internet Protocal (TCP/IP) [Properties] / General tab
Make sure "Obtain an IP... automatically" & "Obtain DNS... automatically" are clicked.
