WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The search engine worked AND the topic was exactly what I was looking for..........with NO FLAMING AND NO THREAD HIJACKING!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway! Thanks for your suggestions! I'll be teaching a high-level uni class where a lot of the students will be taking the TOEFL test and many of them will be going to study abroad. I taught them last semester and found that they really lack critical/creative/brainstorming skills so I've been trying to come up with ways to teach them how to think. I've decided to teach debating skills for the first half of the semester. If anyone has any more ideas (I haven't done any formal debates since high school), I'd appreciate them...especially topics for debate (PLEASE NOT DOK-DO!).
deessell: This is a GREAT idea to get them started! Nothing too serious, but it will make them have to THINK, not just regurgitate an answer....THANKS! |

| Same as ajuma above, I'm looking for ideas for the winter program and very impressed by deessell's activity above. I have found from the occasional attempt to teach debate/discussion that students will acquiesce to a consensus disappointingly quickly, so these more contrived type of activities are very useful to get them actually questioning each other's arguments without feeling uncomfortable. |
