Ok, I want to get a loan to get a apartment here. I need about 10-15 million won.

Any advice from anyone?

I have checked all Canadians banks, none have any branches in Korea to my knowledge.

I am thinking either ING or HSBC.

I am sure someone out there has gotten a loan before. Any advice?

I expected as much.

I tried ING, but I couldn't seem to get any information off of their cryptic website.

I don't believe ING offers consumer banking services in Korea. Try HSBC instead.

I was already refused by them. The HSBC branches in Korea only service Koreans.

Thats weird. A teacher at my school banks with them with no problem. He is Canadian.

Maybe you just ran into one of those less then friendly bank officials!

But I'll wager your colleague didn't take out a consumer loan in his own name. (Not auto financing, but a straightforward bank loan.) I don't think -- no, "I strongly doubt" that banks here are going to be helpful in the case Ilsanman describes. We're talking about a Korean bank (okay, a bank in Korea) extending an unsecured personal loan to a foreigner? I'm afraid I just don't see that sort of thing happening, not soon and not with any consistency.

I don't want to state categorically that it's impossible, as there's a first time for everything. I also don't want to discourage anyone from chasing down an answer that proves me wrong. (In fact, I'd love to be proven wrong about this!) But Ilsanman is asking not because he's idly curious as to what banks in Korea will or won't do (as if all banks or even all branches of one bank in Korea consistently apply the same rules across the board for every foreigner who walks through their door). He's asking because he has a genuine need to borrow that money, and I would guess not years down the road but pronto.

So then, I'd like to recommend skipping banks and focusing on the more promising options. (I say 'more promising', but I don't know your particular situation. Hence, these suggestions may not be feasible in your case.)

1. Employer

2. Apartment owner (landlord)

3. Private sources (friends)

Any of these three should be far less hassle than a bank. And as I said, I just don't think banks in Korea are prepared to help in this situation anyway. I've taken out bank loans in Korea in my own name or company name, but always with collateral. How did I get the collateral for the first loan? Saved & invested for half a decade and then bought property. If there were an easier way to do it, then I wasn't aware of it. I don't think times have changed too radically since then.
