I'm watching CNN and they're doing this special on North Korea. The American reporter sounds like almost anyone that's spent any amount of time in South Korea, you adopt this cynical attitude, like "how can you people actually believe your own words? Are you all deluded?"

Anyway, the one thing I thought that was funny, the parallel between North Korea and the Hagwon system: the CNN reporter was filming a woman selling juice outside of a park. His North Korean "handler" tells him to stop filming the woman. Why? She is complaining. The reporter is like "but she hasn't said a word. How can you say she's complaining?" The NK guy turns to the woman, says something in Korean. Suddenly she starts complaining.

Yeah, it seriously echoed the old "The mothers are complaining" excuse hagwons give for some radical change in your employment status...

This comment is tangentally related to your comment but it is a good observation none-the-less. My friend, a veteran Korea observer said the NK is the real Korea. The South is a deviation.

Well that is the growing feeling in South Korea... the North is not the enemy. It is the guardian of the real Korean spirit, the old ways. The South has become corrupt by foreign influences. When the Koreas reunify, a new day will be ushered in where Korea takes its place on the world stage and security council (because it has nukes). Just don't ask them to give up their copy of Starcraft, however. That the North tortures and starves its people to death seems to be ignored. You know, whatever it takes.
