I've noticed a couple non-ESL related crackdowns. For the last two days, at a certain intersection in Nowon, they've had cops issuing tickets to people on motorbikes not wearing helmets.

And then, I could hardly believe my eyes, one of those subway transit cops actually took a guy off the subway for peddling crap. I was pretty happy as it was Sunday morning and I was tired and the last thing I wanted was some guy shouting next to me about how the life of a subway ajumma will be made easier by buying a keychain with a flashlight...

Can confirm. I'm seeing bikers all around me being hauled over for not wearing helmets. A lot of them have a passenger, also unhelmeted. Whenever I see a young guy with his girl on the back get pulled over and the cop's writing up the ticket, I always slow down and stick my tongue out at them. Razz

Yes, it's infantile, but I don't mind playing the donkey. And if that bit of salt rubbed in their financial wound convinces them it's better to wear a helmet next time, so much the better.

I (nearly) always wear mine. Razz

I hate how they lay their product, gum, "I lost my fingers in a factory mishap, now I can't work, my family is starving" cards, etc. on your lap or bag or knee or anywhere. You have to sit there motionless until he comes back to retrieve it.

You're just too darn nice. I'd brush it off and tell them not to put their garbage on me. Cool

I find if you pretend to bury yourself in a book, they usually pass whitey by. But I have had the odd "never say die or even give up on a whitey!" one who will not spare you...

I go running on the street before or after school. I'm wearing basically my running togs, a ballcap, and an MP3 player. Do I look like I'm carrying around money? I had this one guy pushing a little ice cream cart bound and determined to sell me an ice cream. I mean, when you're in the middle of a run, in a quest to stay fit, don't you think "I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL I CAN TAKE A BREAK AND EAT ICE CREAM."

Geez.

I find them mostly irritating but then I think, "in Canada these people would just go on welfare. At least they got some gumption." Granted there is no welfare to speak of in Korea so gumption is thrust upon them...

They'd always put it right on my crotch, and I'd have a hard time (no pun intended) taking it off for fear that someone would mistake my gesture and think I was touching myself. That's how they getcher.

Funny thing is, though, that I'd sit there like a statue, and when the person came back 'round, the card would still be perched upon my zipper-boner, so that the poor dear wouldn't have the nerve to reclaim it.

Slightly related: anyone have the pleasure of catching the dude who sells chamois on the inter-city buses? Just imagine: a guy selling chamois on an inter-city bus -- the driver yells at him the whole ride, he yells back at the driver, nobody buys a single chamois -- the guy demands to be let out in the middle of the highway, but the driver, who has been threatening to toss the guy off since he stepped on the bus, refuses -- finally, the seller, on the verge of tears, tries to find a seat, only there aren't any, so he stands in the aisle while everyone looks away uncomfortably. It's a wonder to behold, believe me. I've seen it four times, and I can't wait to see it again.

THAT guy needs to hear about the wonderful mode of transportation that is the Seoul Metro.
