hi. well i've visited places like Thailand, Philippines and WANT to go to some more tropical islands or countries in the future. now since my stays have always been short, at times i thought what it would be like to live there, say a year. i mean, what could a guy do in a country that cant compare the salary one can make in korea, japan etc. i mean, these so-called poorer countries wouldnt have have that much to offer in terms of work would they?? i mean, im sure the english industry isnt very strong compared to here. some places are cheap to live in, nice weather (if you like the heat) and not much stress BUT what would you do for cash, haha??
i know this may sound like a weird thread, but just curious. living in a place like bali, or vietnam or whatever for a long period of time must be a little hard to do without a good paying job like korea , japan, taiwan etc??
any opinions? |

I highly recommend Myanmar. Awesome. They play hockey there with left-over toothpicks! |

Ah, the great conundrum of Asian TEFL employment. You can't have your cake and eat it too. |

I'm engaged to and Indonesian, speak the language and am more enamoured with the southern part of this continent. I've lived in Thailand and spent some time in Indo doing privates, but it all boils down to what a previous poster said, you can't have your cake and eat it here. If I could earn anywhere approaching 2/3 of my current salary down there, I'd be off in a flash, but I'm not going to hold my breath. If you move to SE Asia, you'll more likely end up spending more of your own money but have a much better time. |

The free market tells the story, doesn't it. If Korea or even Saudi Arabia were as pleasant to work in as Thailand - they would pay poorly too as teachers would flood the market for the current wages.
The best compromise might be Taiwan. I loved the two years I worked there. The countryside is beautiful - the eastern beaches very nice and rarely visited by anyone. But, the work situation is difficult for many people. Mine job was just okay (a college), a bit problemmatic, but paid reasonably well with lots of vacation time. |

Not quite a tropical retreat, but close... What about SINGAPORE? If you've got some experience and certification behind you, getting work in Singa shouldn't take too long. The salaries are pretty good, and if you work in a government or similar school, you will get enough holiday time and money to just take yourself off to a nearby tropical surround, and spend the time as you wish. Singapore is tops for me - although the heat nearly killed me! |

Anyone know what's the deal with Vietnam? I've heard rumours that they pay $15-$20 American in some parts with a super low cost of living. |

After several years in ESL, I am convinced the best thing you can do is work in Korea at a University gig, with lots of time off, and live in Thailand or elsewhere during your paid vacations.
Besides, Thailand = LADYBOYS! |

Yes, I worked in Vietnam for two years and if you get a job at one of the big school they will pay you $17US per hour for GE and Business English and YL. $20 US p/h at RMIT.
Be warned though, the visa situation is currently in a mess and there are lots of problems with teachers only being issued with three month visas.
The cost of living is very low. I had a great time and I enjoyed it a lot. I had more holidays and the students are generally very motivated. |
