It says in my contract that the school will pay for my airfare, so long as it is a direct flight from my hometown to Incheon, economy class.
On my way here, GEPIK tried to stiff me, claiming that having to transfer in Vancouver (there are no direct flights from Winnipeg) meant it was not a "direct flight." I fought it, and got reimbursed eventually.
When I flew home, I missed my first flight and had to purchase a more expensive ticket from another airline-- economy class, regular fare. My school is refusing to pay for the ticket, and claim they should pay the first, cheaper ticket it because it is my fault that I missed my flight.
The contract doesn't say anything about a maximum amount, or checking with the school before purchasing. However, when we referred the matter to the GEPIK supervisor, he wrote :
>
>Thank you for your message. I can understand how you feel. I think the main cause of your problem is your late arrival to the airport. The other thing looks trivial. So you deserve to receive 2,239,400 won instead of 3,574,400 Won. If you are enforced to purchase much more expensive ticket, you need to consult your coteacher about that in advance.
I feel sorry about your situation.
Have a good day.

So, here's my question. Should I take it to the Labour Board? (When my co-teacher refused to pay, I suggested a mediator, possibly the Labour Board. He said "I don't know what that is. I don't know what that is. We are a school. We don't use that." Lies lies lies lies. I'm frustrated. I just read another thread on the Labour Board, saying it was a major waste of time. I'm finished with the contract, so I have nothing to lose but time. What do you think? |

I am sorry but I don't think you can expect them to pay for your flight since it is your fault that you missed yoru flight.
I mean.. what was the reason for you to miss your flight? School related? |

I'd say they're probably right. Why should they pay for your mistake? Just tellin' it like it is. |

Okay, I made a mistake, but if I had gotten a cheaper flight, would it have been ethical of me to bill them for the first one? I shouldn't be able to profit from my mistake, so why should they?
I'd like them to do what it says in the contract. That seems fair to me. |

take them to the labour board....your contract is quite clear.....they have to pay for the ticket there is no stipulation of price or anything of the sort...the fact you missed your flight is irrelevant.....
The sooner people start taking GEPIK to the labour board over illegal clauses in the contracts and failute to live up to the contracts the better! |

Just out of curiosity, how did they know that you missed your flight and had to purchase a more expensive ticket? |

perhaps she was forced to stay right till the end of her contract and had to pay extra to extend the validity of her ticket? |

Nope-- I bought a ticket ahead of time, and tried to get a bargain. I told my co-teacher I had found a good price, and he said "Price doesn't matter."
I submitted the ticket, but they refused to reimburse me until the end of the month, leaving me with NO CASH, and so I had to use my VISA to get around. If they had reimbursed me promptly, I wouldn't be bothering with this.
However, I mixed up the departure time in my frazzled hurry to sort out the apartment, and although I used my last won and borrowed money from strangers to grab a taxi (remember- no cash), I missed the flight.
It was important for me to take the next possible one, because my elderly grandfather was only in town for one more day. So when I returned, I handed them the new ticket. |

It's not their fault you missed the flight.... I think you should be reimbursed for that one and not the more expensive one. If it is a matter of money, then they could turn around and tell you to keep waiting until a cheaper flight comes along. |

I'm beginning to think that my mistake was submitting the ticket ahead of time like a good girl. If they had told me I needed approval for my ticket, then it would have been prudent to put that in writing, or even say it out loud, as opposed to "Price doesn't matter." |
