Hey, I'm thinking of getting a scooter. I want to know what i need to get in the way of licenses and plates. I want to get a smaller one about 50cc's and I've heard that I don't need either, but can't find any concrete info. Can anyone tell me for sure or even better, a link to some official website. I've looked at the department of transport site (or whatever department is incharge of this sort of thing) but can't find any info. So any help would be appreciated. Also, what about insurance? Can you get this for a scooter without license and plates?
And one final question, can anyone estimate a price on a scooter (maybe used)? Maybe one of the ones that look a little old school? Any help would be fantastic, thanks.

When i was first looking at bikes I was told by the (very reputable and reccomended if you are in jinju) dealer that the 50cc requires no licence or rego. This was two years ago but i'm sure its the same deal. Technically a licence and rego is required for anything bigger. Having said this, I've been riding for 2 years on a 125 bike (not scooter) without rego plates and I've never had a problem. I have an international permit but never been bothered to get the korean licence. I've been pulled up a few times for random breath tests and so forth but never been asked to show licence papers.... (normally just get a giggling pimple-faced fella who waves me on when he sees my waegook nose poking out from under the helmet).

I used to not bother with the helmet sometimes when doing short little supply runs to the shops or whathaveyou but the boys in blue are starting to get a bit antsy about this......

After getting hit by a truck and having three broken ribs in Jeju in 2001, I gave up on scooters. Cars are cheap enough and much safer.

My friend bought a larger scooter from a dealer in Jinju several years ago, which he resold to the same guy when he bought a car. Three years later, after he had moved to another town, he got a phone call from the police telling him that they found his scooter in a ditch, and that he needed to pay 3 years of unpaid road taxes, registration, and a fine (something like 300000 won). My friend informed them that he had sold the scooter, so the registration should have been changed (obviously, the guy thought my friend was leaving Korea and conveniently forgot to change the registration in his name). Lukily for my friend, he had kept the dealer's business card. I would have loved to see the look on the guy's face when the cops came knocking at his door asking for the unpaid taxes. I wonder if it's the same reputable dealer.

bah...... the same could be said world wide..... but two-wheels will always be superior....... (weather permitting)

Chances are anyway in korea that cars aren't that much safer..... getting wacked by a speeding bus when in a small matiz is still gonna hurt. On a bike you can zoom away in front of the deranged tintop pilots...

2 wheels good- 4 wheels bad........

first of all, your friend should have cancelled the rego or notified the dept of the transfer... Secondly, sounds like the police were asking for an under the table handout as opposed to a legitimit legal fine.... When rego expires, it expires. Report the bike a s having been stolen, and no dumping fine would be required...

Obviously, you've never bought, or sold, a vehicule from a dealer in Korea. For a minimal fee, they will take care of the papework. Besides, he had them sign a receipt as proof he had sold them the scooter.

The cops wanted a fine, not a bribe. The registartion fees and taxes had to be paid because it was obvious the scooter had been driven (it was found in a ditch, as I clearly explained).

I'm thinking about selling my scooter if you're interested. It doesn't need plates and is racing red.

thanks for all your replies. Is it a problem if I don't have a drivers license? I never felt the need to get one in Toronto. So what about insurance? Is it possible to get it when I don't have a license or plates?
And I would be interested in the scooter that is for sale? How much? How old is it? Would you throw in lessons? I have never been on one before.
What size is it?
Thanks so much.
Also, is 50cc too small to ride with two people on it for very long? I would have my girlfriend with me some of the time.
Again, you are all so helpful.
