I tried to get a tourist visa to go to China today but they were pretty stingy with the visa. I said i wanted a 30 multiple entry visa but they said the would give me only a one time entry visa. Then I said I wanted to go to Mongolia and back the clerk said she would give me 2 transit visas of 7 days each. I wanted a longer visa so I could take the long way back but she mumbled something negative and then asked for W130,000.

I crumpled up the paperwork, threw it at the window and told her I didn't want to visit her intercoursing country.

Is getting a visa like that all the time or was she having a heavy flow day?

A chum of mine travels frequently to China and and for three years has failed to get a multi eintry visa. Seemingly, "foreigners" in Korea cannot get them here, although they are easily obtainable in Hong Kong.

I could not get a multiple entry visa for love nor money in Hanoi for China. I had to make do with two one month visas. This could work for you too. the first one will expire when you leave China and then you can use the second one on the way back.

The visas don't get activated until they are stamped so its no problem to have two at the same time.

Most of the time, they only give single-entry visas.
From my experience, the only way to extend your visa was either;

1. to go to hong Kong or shenzhen at the 1-month mark and get another visa to enter china

2. Go to the PSB to extend it (but for that, you need extraordinary circumstance that would allow them to let you stay)

Yea, my response was pretty strong. Travel looks fun but its very stressful. I had spent most of the last few months clearing up details on visiting the Silk road and Tibet and then going to Nepal and it got pretty much dumped on in a few minutes. China is actually pretty low on my travel plans, there are other more interesting and welcoming places.
I had to go to the consulate three times to finally be told no. The first time I learned the the consulate was not open until 5:30, the second time I learned, they only issue visas in The AM. The third time I found my travel plans were quartered and the visa price increased four fold.

I can fly to Mongolia, I can occupy myself in the Philippines and SE Asia, I can make the epic South-North America trip. I really don't need China.

You can get a multi in HK at China Travel Services....costs about 300 HK$ if I remember correctly....got one last year

It is EXTREMELY easy to get your visa stay lengthened and your visa changed to a multiple entry once you enter China at the PSB. I have done it multiple times, including in August. You don't need much more reason than "I want to stay around and spend more money, then leave for a bit, come back and spend even more."
