Sealed transcripts, anyone?

Hector's documents, btw, were fantastic. Why indeed would a sealed transcript be any more difficult to forge? I just visited the "degree mills" on Khaosan Road and they're making excellent product; it won't take them long to turn to this new task.
A bit obliquely, I'd say the whole problem is like the girls at the front desk of the hagwon who absolutely refuse to speak English: Immigration is not in the business of calling up universities and confirming degrees; the burden will be on the applicant, even if there is no applicant-driven solution that will alleviate the problem (ie degree forgery).
I loved the anecdote about "memory lane" at Immigration. Are they still doing fingerprints for new arrivals? I had mine done in 1993, and if it's still required, well, I didn't have to do it again despite a very long absence. |
Well, the first thing that would clue them in on the fact the transcripts have been forged would be if the enveloppe had been mailed from a different city then the one where the university is located. |

I think it's pretty bogus. I still send copies, and am fully prepared to deliver the real goods if/when I'm hired. But now I'm wondering if not providing them from the get-go might damage my chances of getting the job in the first place.

If it was a hagwon job and I was just applying for a job, that would seem a bit crazy. But if you're applying for a university job, the review process might be different. I know I have a friend at Kodae and he said anyone who doesn't supply 100% of the documents they ask for are not even considered for the job. So if you really want a U job and you think you are qualified, you better do as they say. |

Anyone out there that attended the U of Sask?
I am trying to get some transcripts (stilllllllllllll) and the site where you order them says I need to have an NSID in order to use the on-line ordering system.
Anyone out there know how to go about getting an NSID?
I have tried to contact them, but all I got in response was a computer generated letter. |

| I would recommend calling them. It's not expensive and your answers will be taken care of immediately. |

How tight are they on this sucker? I posted mine from my home to the school in question, as I generally keep a copy around for just such reasons, and the E2 application went through just fine that way. What I don't quite understand about the process is why they need both transcript and original document...it says on the transcript that I graduated with such and such a degree...in what way does the original degree add one bit to that?
I have to wonder how much concern over forgery is fueled by paranoia (I'm sure it happens, but really, how often?), and if the requirement for both degree certificate and transcript is not due to a fundamental lack of understanding of the University system. After all, if I apply for grad school, it's the transcript they want...they couldn't give two hoots about the degree cert.
As I've stated in other areas, I'm sure there's a perfectly logical reason for all this, it's just eluding me. |

I don't have a phone. I think I've tried and failed to call Canada from a pay phone before.
With the time difference (14 hrs) I would have to call between 12 and 2 am local time........ hmmm.
I wonder who I can bribe to let me use their phone during those hours?

Hmm. still no luck contacting the ol' U of S.
I have a question though regarding my situation. Since I don't have transcripts yet, is it OK for me to sign a contract and get the ball rolling with immigration? Or do I have to wait until they finally arrive?
I have had 2 job offers already, but I am not sure what to do until those gosh darned shuckemuffinidgeonaldomunswackerdweebazoidal transcripts get here.

If you get a phone card, (like A+, for example, which is commonly available) you can follow the instructions on the back, and you'll probably be able to sort it out. |

So far, i haven't been able to get a phone card that works.
Every phone I try it on goes into some recording before I even get past the first 3 digits.
Email,,,,,,,,well, the guy told me to talk to someone else......typical. 
There is supposed to be a downloadable form that I can print out and send by mail, but the computer I'm at won't download it for some reason.
I just keep getting these pop-up messages in Korean that I can't understand.
Yes this idea of getting transcripts was a great one! |

Can anyone tell me how to get this phone card to work?
I tried on a pay phone........no luck.
I tried from my yeogwan....... I don't even get past the first 3 numbers.
The card is called "hello" and it comes with an instruction booklet.
You are supposed to dial in first and then dial about 100 numbers including a "pin" and a country number and then the number you want to call. I can't even get started though.
The instructions give 2 different access numbers for Canada?
OK I figured it out, after several attempts from various phones and pocketloads of change.
What a weird system, I have to keep loading in change at the same time as I am using the card.  |

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has had any problems sending over their original diploma. I am very hesitant to do this, as I am not sure if it is possible to get a new diploma if mine disappears. Also, is there any way to avoid this, such as making a copy and notarizing it?

I bought "The Gahn" card. 300~400 minutes (can't remember) for 15,000 won. There are probably quite a few very good cards out there, but there are a ton of bad cards. My first couple of years I bought more than my share of loser cards in Itaewon or elsewhere where I'd get maybe 120 minutes or so per 10,000 won.
It's strange that you have to keep feeding money into the phone. I used a payphone for my first year and I don't remember putting in any extra money.
If that's the problem you may want to use the machines that use the cards. It would save you the hassle of always throwing in money. |

Well, that was my original idea, but I couldn't get that type of phone card.
The card I was able to find is one where you have to dial a certain number, enter a pin number etc. All the while you have to keep plugging in change into the payphone.
I couldn't get it to work from the yeogwan either so that's what I am faced with. |

You have two options, and due to recent rule changes at Korean immigration and their overseas consulates, I would recommend the first.
1) Send your original diploma, sealed transcripts, and 4 2x2-inch photos to your school/recruiter in Korea (use FedEx or DHL; UPS blows goats).
2) Send your diploma to the Korean consulate closest to the university from which you graduated (THIS IS A RECENT CHANGE, AND MOST PEOPLE ARE UNAWARE OF IT). For example, if you graduated from UCLA, but live in Chicago, you will have to send your diploma to the Korean consulate in LA, NOT the one in Chicago. This is a huge pain in the ass. Also, you now have to send your sealed transcripts to the consulate as well. This was not the case until a few weeks ago.
