I have been in Korea for less than two weeks and the teaching job which flew me over here has now decided that they do not want me anymore. I guess the parents that have been watching me learn and teach these first few weeks on the video cameras in the classroom have complained too many times. I was told yesterday that I would be let go becasue the private school which I work for has to rely on these mothers money for all of our survival and they do not approve of me and have threatened not to pay anymore.
They also said that I will not be getting paid and that the time I work here, they set a date of September 16th, will cover my plane ticket from the US to Korea, and the settling fee of 400,000 Won.
So, with out much money I am not sure what to do, I can go back home that is out of the budget and outside of what I really want to do. I think I can find another job, I have an B.Ed if that helps. But other than that I need some advise. |

Sorry to hear about what happened to you. I say try and look for another job and I'm sure that you get one as you have an education degree. Where you very strict on the kids? Here in Korea you are half teacher, half clown. If the kids are happy then the mothers are happy then the school in happy. That's how it's works.
But don't worry. Chin up. Get another job and finish the one you have now. Ask here for any more advice and the guys will help you out. |

This is not on, they are meant to give you a month's notice. Contact the labor board asap. |

I am going to contact the labor board tomorrow thanks for the advise. The mothers were mad because one 4yr old hit another with a toy or something and she complained, after watching it. I didn't think it was that big of a deal but I guess it was, the kids involved were not that shaken up by it, infact I thought it was sort of normal behavior for a kid of that age. |

are you sure that is all? there has to be more than that. That doesn't sound like that big of an incident. How do you think you have been doing? Be honest. being parachuted into a bunch of classes is pretty intimidating. It usually takes a fair bit of time before a person starts to get good at teaching. Unless a hogwon is trying to scam you of money they usually don't like to fire the foreign teacher. They are losing a fair chunck of cash to fire you so soon. |

I have seen mother hate a teacher just because they are black, fat or even ugly. Maybe it is another reason. Did the owner seem really disappointed when they picked you up at the airport. It may be that they have other reasons for firing you and are trying to be nice. |

I once saw a dwarf in Korea. She sent a head shot of herself and thought she was being sneaky, then she gets here and she is a dwarf.....she thought they couldn't fire her if she had the visa before coming here. One week later she had no house or job.....it sucked. |

Ok, I belive that there have been ups and downs during my first week of training/working/teaching at this hogwon but I can say that nothing really sticks out in my mind as a major event or string of events that would push me out. That is to say I have seen a little confusion in my first week, with some time at the end of lessons where things in class get a little out of normal meaning the students can tell I am new.....There has been a few discipline problems in class, especially with the last teacher just up in leaving my 4yr olds have a problem transfering there attention. Nothing though really sticks out to me or my co-workers as grounds for dismissal. There could be some Korean custom or personal thing I stepped on but I can not think of what that could be either.
Ok, so I know the administration has fired me with out real grounds..or at least that they have told me so. I have a gripe with them that I could probably turn into a big enough fight around the office to get my job back but.......I have to ask myself would it just be better to move on to another job.....that is the hardest question to answer. |
